Chapter 2: The Signature She Never Gave

Aaliyah had barely reached the driveway when Marcus rushed after her.
“You’re going back inside to apologize.”
She turned slowly.
“To your mother—or to everyone who laughed while you treated me like a servant?”
“It was only dishes,” Marcus snapped.
“You embarrassed my whole family.”
“No, Marcus.
You did that when you said serving them was my job.”
Denise appeared in the doorway.
“If she walks away tonight, don’t let her come crawling back!”
Aaliyah’s eyes filled with tears, but her voice stayed steady.
“Don’t worry, Denise.
I won’t.”
Her phone suddenly rang.
The caller ID showed the name of the attorney who had handled the purchase of their home.
“Aaliyah,” the attorney said urgently, “I’m sorry to call so late, but I need to confirm something.
Did you authorize Marcus to remove your name from the property deed?”
Aaliyah froze.
“What did you say?”
Behind her, Marcus’s face lost all color.
Denise stopped shouting.
The attorney continued, “Documents were submitted this morning with what appears to be your signature.”
Aaliyah stared at her husband.
“Marcus, what have you done?”
He opened his mouth, but Denise answered first.
“She wasn’t supposed to find out yet.”
