Chapter 3: What Three Years Had Hidden

Nobody moved.

The little boy pressed himself against the woman's leg.

He was wearing a blue jacket with a small bear on the pocket.

He looked around the room with wide, calm eyes — the way children do when they don't yet understand that the silence around them is not normal.

Elena looked at the boy.

Then she looked at Alejandro.

His face had changed.

Not guilt.

Not fear.

Something quieter and more terrible than both.

The look of a man watching a wall he built over years collapse in a single second.

"Alejandro." Elena's voice was steady.

"Is that your son?"

He didn't answer.

"Alejandro."

"Elena, let me explain—"

"Is.

That.

Your son."

The woman in the hallway spoke first.

Her name, Elena would learn later, was Camila Reyes.

She was thirty-one.

She had met Alejandro four years ago at a conference in Monterrey.

She had believed, until eight months ago, that he was separated.

"His name is Mateo," Camila said.

"He's three years old."

The room made no sound.

One of the guests near the back doorway quietly set down her glass.

Elena looked at Mateo.

The boy looked back at her.

He had Alejandro's jaw.

The same shape around the eyes.

"How long?" Elena asked.

She was not looking at Alejandro anymore.

She was looking at Victoria.

"How long have you known?"

Victoria's hands were clasped in front of her.

"Elena, I—"

"How long, Victoria."

"Two years." The words came out small.

"Almost two years."

Elena nodded slowly.

She shifted Nicolás higher on her hip.

He had stopped crying.

He was watching his mother's face.

Rafael stepped forward.

"We're leaving.

All of us."

Alejandro moved to block the door.

"You're not taking my son out of this house."

"Which son?" Rafael said.

The question landed like a flat stone dropped on still water.

Alejandro's mouth closed.

Camila looked at the floor.

She had not expected this room.

She had not expected the guests, the mark on Elena's face, the baby in Elena's arms.

She had come because Alejandro had stopped returning her calls for six days.

She had come because she was frightened.

"I didn't know," Camila said quietly.

"About the baby.

About any of this.

He told me the marriage was already over."

"It wasn't," Elena said.

"I know that now."

They looked at each other across the room.

Two women.

One secret between them that neither had chosen.

Alejandro tried again.

"This is not the place for this conversation.

There are people here.

Let's go somewhere private and—"

"You've had two years of private," Elena said.

"It's done."

She walked toward the door.

Rafael moved with her.

A guest stepped aside.

Then another.

Alejandro reached out and grabbed Elena's arm.

Rafael's hand came down on his wrist before Elena could react.

Not violent.

Precise.

The grip of a man who had made decisions in boardrooms for forty years and knew exactly how much pressure a moment required.

"Take your hand off my daughter."

Alejandro released her.

Elena didn't look back.

She walked through the door with Nicolás in her arms, her father beside her, and the sound of Victoria beginning to cry again somewhere behind her.

In the hallway, she passed Camila.

She stopped for one second.

"Did he ever tell you my name?"

Camila hesitated.

"He called you his ex."

Elena looked at her son.

Then back at Camila.

"Get a lawyer," she said.

"For Mateo."

She walked out.

The elevator doors closed.

And in the reflection of the polished metal, she saw her own face for the first time since the fall — the mark along her cheekbone already darkening, Nicolás asleep against her shoulder, her eyes dry and absolutely clear.

Her phone buzzed.

A message from a number she didn't recognize.

*There's something else you need to know about Alejandro.

Something that happened before you met him.

I've been trying to find the right time.

I don't think there is one.

Can we talk?*

She stared at the message.

The elevator reached the ground floor.

May you like

The doors opened.

She didn't move.
