Chapter 2: The Letter That Should Not Exist

Richard turned the wooden airplane over in his hands.

One wing was cracked, and three letters had been carved underneath: **E.B.C.**

Mark’s face lost its color.

“Give it to me,” Claudia said, reaching for it.

“Noah took that from our room.”

Noah clung to Richard’s shirt.

“No, Grandpa.

Mommy gave it to me.”

The room fell silent.

Richard looked down at him.

“Your mommy gave you this?”

Noah nodded.

“She said if she couldn’t come home, I had to give it to you.

But Claudia said Mommy was a liar.”

“That’s enough!” Mark snapped.

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“Do not raise your voice at that child again.”

Claudia tried to laugh.

“He’s three years old.

He invents things.”

“I didn’t,” Noah whispered.

“She locked it in the box.

I found the key.”

Richard gently shook the airplane.

Something rattled inside.

Claudia suddenly rushed forward, but Richard stepped back and pulled at the damaged wing.

A hidden wooden panel slid open, revealing a tiny memory card and a tightly folded piece of paper.

Mark stared at the paper.

“Dad, whatever is written there, you need to understand—”

Richard unfolded it.

The first line was in Noah’s mother’s handwriting.

Then Richard read the date—and realized she had written it two days after Mark claimed she had vanished.
