Chapter 6: Room 214

Daniel traced the payment from Silver Pines to a private facility outside Denver.

“The invoice says Emma Cole was transferred at seven tonight,” he said.

Grace held up an emergency court order.

“Deputy Meyers can enter with us, but we need to leave now.”

Mark stepped in front of Richard.

“You’re not taking Noah into a storm.”

“You were prepared to take him ten minutes ago.”

“I am still his father.”

Richard wrapped Noah in Jonah’s coat.

“Then you should have behaved like one.”

The facility stood behind an unmarked iron gate.

Deputy Meyers showed the order to the night supervisor, who blocked the hallway.

“We have no Emily Bellacorte here.”

Grace held up a photograph.

“She was registered as Emma Cole.”

The supervisor’s eyes shifted toward room 214.

Richard pushed past him.

“Emily?”

A thin woman sat beside a narrow bed, wearing gray clothes and holding a paper cup.

She flinched when the door opened.

“Dad?”

Richard stopped.

“Emily.”

She looked beyond him and saw Noah.

“Mommy!”

The cup fell from her hand.

Noah ran into her arms, and Emily sank to the floor with him.

“You came back,” Noah sobbed.

“I tried.

I tried every day.”

Richard knelt beside them.

Emily raised one trembling hand but did not touch him.

“I called you six times.”

“I never received the calls.”

“Mark said you listened to every message.

He said you believed I was unstable.”

Richard’s eyes filled.

“I believed the easier lie.”

“You believed your son.”

“I should have believed the woman asking me for help.”

Emily’s hand struck the floor between them.

“You should have come!”

Richard bowed his head.

“Yes.”

Noah reached for both of them.

“Don’t be mad.

Grandpa found my airplane.”

Emily looked at Richard.

“You opened it?”

“I found the letter and the card.”

“Then you know why they kept me here.”

“The video ended before you could tell me.”

A nurse appeared in the doorway.

She removed her identification badge and handed it to Deputy Meyers.

“My name is Tessa Reed.

I cared for Emily during the night shift.”

The supervisor pointed toward the hall.

“You are dismissed.”

Tessa did not move.

“Claudia ordered medication whenever Emily asked to call home.

Mark visited every Friday and told us his wife had abandoned her real name.”

Emily held Noah tighter.

“They made me sign the custody waiver after they sedated me.”

Tessa nodded.

“I witnessed it.

I also copied the medication log.”

The outer doors opened.

Mark and Claudia entered with a private attorney and two security guards.

Mark saw Emily and stopped.

“You shouldn’t be out of bed.”

Emily rose slowly.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

Claudia pointed at Tessa.

“That nurse stole confidential records.”

“I preserved evidence,” Tessa replied.

Mark faced Richard.

“We can settle this tonight.

Return control of the company, destroy the card, and Emily can leave with you.”

“And Noah?”

“He stays with me.”

Emily stepped between Mark and the child.

“You will never lock him away again.”

Mark lowered his voice.

“If you fight me, I will tell the court about the night you drove into the gate.

I will make sure you never see Noah without supervision.”

“You switched my medication that night.”

“Can you prove it?”

Tessa held up the copied log.

“I can.”

Claudia grabbed the pages and tore them in half.

Deputy Meyers seized her wrist.

“The originals are stored electronically,” Tessa said.

“You destroyed a copy.”

Mark looked at Richard.

“Take my offer.

By morning, the board will vote to sell the company.

Every employee you claim to care about will lose their job.”

Richard drew the memory card from his pocket.

“Emily, is there more on this?”

“There are three videos.

The airplane only opens the first file unless you enter a password.”

“What password?”

Emily looked at Noah.

“The first word he ever said.”

Noah touched the airplane.

“Fly.”

Grace typed the word into her laptop.

Two hidden files appeared.

The second video showed Mark standing inside room 214.

His recorded voice filled the room.

“Once Dad signs the guardianship papers, move Emily somewhere nobody can find her.”

May you like

Then Claudia’s voice answered from behind the camera.

“And after Noah’s trust is empty, the child won’t matter anymore.”
