Chapter 5: The Witness Claudia Never Expected

Grace placed her laptop on the dining table and opened the trust account.

“Eight million, four hundred thousand dollars,” she said.

“Transferred in three payments.”

Mark removed his gloves.

“Those funds were reinvested.”

“In a company registered yesterday?”

“You are no longer our attorney.”

“I represent Richard and Noah’s trust.”

Claudia slid the guardianship order toward Deputy Meyers.

“Until a judge rejects this, Mark controls Richard’s financial decisions.”

A video hearing began twenty minutes later.

Judge Helen Price appeared on Grace’s screen while the storm pressed against the lodge windows.

Judge Price adjusted her glasses.

“Mr.

Bellacorte, did you authorize these transfers?”

Richard faced the camera.

“No.”

Mark sat beside Claudia.

“My father has been forgetting agreements for months.”

“Name one,” Richard said.

“You forgot giving me control of the company.”

“I remember refusing.”

Claudia placed medical reports before the camera.

“Three specialists noted confusion, anger, and paranoia.”

Grace picked up the first report.

“All three evaluations were arranged by Claudia.”

“Because Richard’s family was too afraid to act,” Claudia replied.

Judge Price turned to Richard.

“Can you establish where the trust funds went?”

Grace shook her head.

“The receiving company is shielded.

We need an order for the bank records.”

“Until then, the temporary guardianship remains in place.”

Mark smiled and reached for Noah.

“Come here, son.”

Noah hid behind Richard’s chair.

“I want Grandpa.”

“You’re coming home.”

“There is no home,” Noah cried.

“Only the dark room.”

Richard stood between them.

“You will not touch him.”

Mark’s voice hardened.

“You are making this worse.

If you continue interfering, I will place you in supervised care and sell this lodge before sunrise.”

“You would lock away your father and your wife for money?”

“I would protect this family from people who cannot protect themselves.”

A knock sounded at the front entrance.

Jonah opened the door to a broad-shouldered man carrying a metal case.

Claudia shot to her feet.

“Daniel?”

Her brother brushed snow from his coat.

“Hello, Claudia.”

“You were told never to come near us again.”

“You told me that after I refused to sign the second set of papers.”

Judge Price leaned toward the screen.

“Who is this man?”

Daniel faced the laptop.

“Daniel Foster.

Claudia paid me to witness Richard’s guardianship forms.”

Mark stood.

“He’s lying.”

Daniel opened the metal case.

“She paid me twenty thousand dollars.

I returned it this afternoon.”

He set bank receipts and printed messages beside Grace.

Claudia laughed.

“My brother has gambling debts.

He will say anything for money.”

Daniel took out his phone.

“That’s why I recorded our last conversation.”

Claudia’s own voice filled the room.

“Use Keene’s old signature.

Nobody checks a doctor after the funeral.”

Mark lunged for the phone, but Deputy Meyers caught his arm.

“Sit down.”

Daniel looked at Richard.

“I signed one page before I understood what it was.

When Claudia asked me to witness Emily’s custody waiver, I refused.”

“Custody waiver?” Richard asked.

Claudia pulled a document from her purse.

“Emily voluntarily surrendered custody of Noah to Mark.

Her signature was witnessed at Silver Pines.”

Grace read the page, then looked toward Daniel.

“Is this the second set of papers?”

“Yes.”

Claudia faced the judge.

“Whatever Daniel thinks he heard, Emily signed that waiver in front of two medical professionals.”

Richard gripped the back of a chair.

“She was being held under a false name.”

“That has not been established,” Mark said.

Judge Price spoke carefully.

“I am suspending Mark’s access to the trust while the transfer is investigated.

However, I cannot overturn a custody waiver without testimony from Emily or proof that her signature was obtained improperly.”

Noah began to cry.

“Don’t make me go.”

Richard lifted him.

“Look at me.

You are staying beside me tonight.”

Mark pointed at the screen.

“Your Honor, I am his father.”

“And you permitted him to stand barefoot in the snow,” Judge Price said.

“Noah will remain under emergency supervision at the lodge until morning.”

Claudia gathered her papers.

“By morning, Emily will confirm every word.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Only if you tell her what to say.”

Grace’s phone chimed.

She opened a newly released bank record and turned it toward Richard.

The trust money had not gone to an investment company.

It had purchased Silver Pines Medical Center—and Claudia was listed as its sole owner.
