Chapter 2: Eleven Missing Minutes

Genevieve met Alessandro halfway across the ballroom and slipped her hand through his arm.

“Where did you disappear to?”

“The terrace.”

“With the servant’s child?” Her smile never moved, but her fingers tightened around his sleeve.

“What did she want?”

Before Alessandro could answer, his phone vibrated once—the signal from Dante.

“Excuse me,” he said.

Genevieve blocked his path for half a second.

“Tonight is about us.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about.”

In his private study, Dante stood beside a security monitor.

“Someone erased eleven minutes from the western corridor footage,” he said.

“Who had access?”

Dante placed a printed log on the desk.

“The deletion used your uncle Silvio’s code.”

Alessandro stared at the name.

“Show me what survived.”

A grainy image appeared: Genevieve entering the corridor with her evening clutch.

Seconds later, Silvio followed her.

Then Dante set a tiny receiver on the desk.

“We caught one sentence from her burner.”

A woman’s voice crackled through the speaker.

“Once Alessandro signs after the wedding, he won’t control anything.”

Alessandro’s face hardened.

“Play it again.”

Before Dante could touch the receiver, the study door opened.

Genevieve stood there—still smiling.

“What exactly are you listening to, darling?”
