Chapter 9: What Justice Looked Like

Investigator Cole turned to Genevieve.

“You are being detained in connection with fraud, coercion, witness intimidation, and the unlawful removal of a child.”

Genevieve held out her wrists, but her eyes remained on Alessandro.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

“You did that without my help.”

One officer escorted her up the path.

Genevieve stopped beside Celeste.

“When this falls apart, do not ask me to forgive you.”

Celeste wiped her cheek.

“I will not ask you for anything again.”

Silvio tried to hand the diamond necklace back to her.

“Tell them I cooperated.”

Celeste closed his fingers around it.

“Keep it.

It is the last thing you will ever take from me.”

Investigator Cole faced Silvio.

“You are being detained for conspiracy, document fraud, obstruction, and falsifying corporate and safety records.”

Silvio looked toward Alessandro.

“Say something.

I raised you after your father failed.”

“You taught me what power without conscience becomes.”

Silvio’s shoulders dropped.

“The family will curse your name.”

“Then they will finally be free to speak.”

The officers led him away.

Dr.

Vale was brought from the estate moments later, his jacket open and his face pale.

“I was following Silvio’s instructions,” he said.

Fatima stood directly in his path.

“You called my daughter a problem.”

“I never intended—”

“You intended me to be afraid.”

Dr.

Vale lowered his eyes.

Investigator Cole took the forged medical records from Dante.

“Your license board will receive these tonight.”

The doctor looked at Alessandro.

“Help me, and I will testify.”

“You will testify because the truth no longer belongs to you.”

At dawn, the board reconvened in the library.

The empty chairs belonging to Silvio and Genevieve remained pulled away from the table.

The corporate attorney stood.

“The emergency suspension was based on falsified records.

I move that Alessandro Rienzi’s authority be restored immediately.”

Alessandro did not sit at the head of the table.

“First, remove the legacy trust from consideration.”

“It is already invalid.”

“Record the vote anyway.”

Seven hands rose.

“Second,” Alessandro said, “open every South Harbor claim from the past fifteen years to independent review.”

One director shifted in his chair.

“That could cost millions.”

Fatima placed Malik’s settlement letter on the table.

“It already cost families more.”

The director looked at the electronic signature.

“Mr.

Rienzi, this has your name.”

“Yes.”

“You say you did not authorize it.”

“I did not.

But my company benefited from my ignorance.”

The room stayed quiet.

Alessandro pushed the letter toward the attorney.

“Put that sentence in the minutes.”

Fatima looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because I will not hide behind a forged signature while you carry the consequences.”

The attorney began writing.

Investigator Cole entered with a sealed evidence receipt.

“The device from the lamb has been logged.

The recordings confirm that Silvio and Genevieve planned the trust transfer for nine months.”

“And Malik’s report?” Fatima asked.

“Verified.

It was altered after his accident.”

Fatima gripped the back of a chair.

“Will his name be cleared?”

Cole placed a copy of the original inspection report in front of her.

“It already has been.”

Fatima touched Malik’s signature.

Her knees weakened, and Alessandro pulled out the chair before she fell.

“He told the truth,” she whispered.

Amara climbed into her lap.

“Daddy told truth?”

Fatima pressed her face into her daughter’s hair.

“Yes, sweetheart.

Daddy told the truth.”

Alessandro turned away to give them privacy, but Fatima caught his sleeve.

“No.

Stay.”

May you like

He faced her.

“You should see what your company tried to erase.”
