Chapter 8: The Name Beneath the Ink

Alessandro lifted both hands.

“Take me instead.”

Genevieve laughed.

“You still think this is a negotiation.”

“It is if you want the transfer to hold.”

She glanced at the signature.

“You signed.”

“With a pen Dante gave me.”

The boat slowed beside the dock.

Genevieve looked from the document to Alessandro.

“What did you do?”

“Ultraviolet tracking ink.

It records pressure, timing, and coercive conditions.”

“You are bluffing.”

A light flashed from the boathouse window.

Dante stood inside with a camera pointed at the dock.

“We recorded everything,” he called.

Genevieve tightened her arm around Amara.

“Turn it off, or she comes with me.”

Fatima stepped onto the dock.

“Amara, look at Mama.”

“Mama.”

“Remember our counting game?”

The little girl nodded through her tears.

“One,” Fatima said.

Amara stamped on Genevieve’s foot.

“Two.”

She dropped beneath Genevieve’s arm.

“Three.”

Alessandro lunged forward and pulled Amara away.

Fatima caught her daughter and fell to her knees, holding her so tightly that the lamb was trapped between them.

“You came,” Amara sobbed.

“I will always come.”

Genevieve jumped toward the boat, but Celeste emerged from behind the boathouse and kicked the boarding rope into the water.

The driver accelerated away alone.

Genevieve spun toward her mother.

“You chose strangers over your own daughter.”

Celeste’s face crumpled.

“No.

I chose the child my daughter was willing to sacrifice.”

Genevieve reached into her clutch.

Dante caught her wrist before she could remove the second phone.

“Let go of me.”

“Unlock it.”

“You have no warrant.”

A woman’s voice came from the path.

“But I do.”

Investigator Maren Cole of the state financial enforcement unit walked onto the dock with two uniformed officers.

The appellate judge from the gala followed her.

Genevieve’s confidence faltered.

“You were a guest in our home.”

The judge removed a small recording device from his pocket.

“Silvio used my name to explain the deleted footage.

I have never drafted a trust for him.”

Investigator Cole held out her hand.

“The phone, Ms.

Ashworth.”

Genevieve pressed the device against her chest.

“My attorney will destroy this case.”

“Your attorney contacted us twenty minutes ago,” Cole said.

“He does not represent you.

He represents Rienzi Logistics.”

Silvio appeared at the top of the path, flanked by two guards.

“Genevieve acted alone,” he called.

“I will testify.”

She stared at him.

“You gave me the medical files.”

“You forged them.”

“You ordered Vale to frighten Fatima.”

Silvio stopped walking.

Investigator Cole looked between them.

“Please continue.

Both of you.”

Genevieve’s face twisted.

“He hid the South Harbor inspection report.

Malik Okafor warned them the platform would fail, and Silvio approved operations anyway.”

Fatima slowly stood with Amara in her arms.

“You knew my husband’s name.”

Genevieve’s eyes moved to her.

“I knew every name in the file.”

“And you still threatened my child.”

“You were collateral.”

Celeste closed her eyes.

A tear slid down her cheek.

Alessandro took the data card from the bench and handed it to Investigator Cole.

“The original report should be here.”

Cole passed it to a technician, who opened the files on a tablet.

“I have it,” he said.

“Inspection photographs, internal messages, settlement instructions, and audio.”

Silvio took one step backward.

Dante blocked the path.

The technician played a recording.

Silvio’s voice carried across the water.

Use Alessandro’s signature.

He never reads the old claims.

Once he marries her, we control the votes and close the harbor file forever.

Every face turned toward Silvio.

Alessandro removed the Rienzi signet ring from his hand and set it on top of the forged trust.

“You wanted my father’s legacy,” he said.

“You can answer for it.”

Silvio looked at the officers approaching him.

“You ungrateful fool.

Without men like me, your clean empire would never have existed.”

May you like

Alessandro met his eyes.

“Then it was never clean.”
