Chapter 2: The Voice on the Phone

Luca’s fiancée forced a nervous laugh.
“You’re embarrassing me in front of everyone.
That maid could have put Bruno there herself!”
Emma stopped at the doorway.
Luca’s jaw tightened.
“Why would she do that?”
“For money!” the woman snapped.
“Look at her.
She’s trying to turn you against me.”
Emma hugged Bruno closer.
“I didn’t even know he belonged to Mr.
Luca until I saw the name on his collar.”
“Then how did you find him?” Luca asked.
Emma hesitated before pulling out her phone.
“Someone sent me a message telling me to check the garage.”
The fiancée’s wine glass trembled in her hand.
“Show me,” Luca said.
Emma held up the screen.
The message had arrived from an unknown number only twenty minutes earlier:
“Bruno is locked behind the storage door.
Hurry.
She plans to move him after the engagement dinner.”
Luca read it twice.
“Who sent this?”
“I don’t know, sir,” Emma whispered.
“But there was another message.”
Before she could open it, the phone rang.
The fiancée stared at the number—and her glass slipped from her fingers.
“You,” she breathed.
“You promised never to contact me again.”
Emma slowly answered and put the call on speaker.
A man’s voice filled the silent room.
“Luca needs to know what she did before Bruno was locked away.”
