Chapter 5: The Bracelet in Emma’s Pocket

Vanessa touched her bare wrist.
“My bracelet.
I wondered where it had gone.”
“You knew exactly where it was,” Emma said.
“How dare you?”
Luca took the phone.
“Who sent this message?”
Before Emma could answer, two security officers entered with the house manager.
“Sir,” the manager said, “Mrs.
Carrington reported a missing diamond bracelet.”
Vanessa’s mother, Eleanor Carrington, rose from the far end of the table.
“I reported nothing.”
Vanessa looked at her.
“Mother, it was a gift from you.”
“That does not make it mine to report.”
Martin pointed toward the hallway.
“The officers should inspect Emma’s coat before she removes anything.”
Emma’s chin trembled.
“Someone put it there.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
“First she finds Bruno.
Then she produces mysterious messages.
Now my bracelet appears in her pocket.
How convenient.”
Luca faced the officers.
“Bring the coat here.
Do not search anything else.”
One officer returned carrying Emma’s grey coat by its hanger.
The bracelet lay inside the pocket exactly as the photograph had shown.
“I have never touched that,” Emma whispered.
Vanessa leaned close to Luca.
“You wanted proof she was after money.
There it is.”
Bruno moved between Emma and the officer, planting his paws beside her shoes.
“Even the dog knows she’s frightened,” Eleanor said.
Vanessa spun toward her mother.
“Stay out of this.”
“No.”
The single word quieted the room.
Martin lifted the bracelet with a napkin.
“Security should call the police.”
“They may call them,” Luca replied.
“But Emma stays here.”
Vanessa gripped his sleeve.
“You are risking everything for a servant you met today.”
“I’m protecting someone who may have been framed in my home.”
“You always choose wounded things,” Vanessa said.
“Sofia knew that better than anyone.”
Luca went still.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Shall I tell them what your perfect wife wrote before she was gone?
She was planning to leave you.”
“Stop,” Eleanor warned.
“No, Mother.
He wants the truth.” Vanessa looked directly into Luca’s eyes.
“Sofia said she could no longer live with a man who cared more about saving strangers than listening to his own wife.”
Luca’s hand slipped from the chair.
His knees struck the edge, and Emma caught his arm.
“Mr.
Luca, sit down.”
“Where did you see that letter?” he asked Vanessa.
“In Sofia’s desk.
You never found it because I removed it.”
“You let me spend three years believing everything between us had been perfect.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You used her private words to control me.”
Vanessa’s voice softened.
“Sign the amendment tonight, and I will give you the letter.
End this spectacle, dismiss Emma, and we can still be married.”
For one terrible moment, Luca stared at the papers.
Martin slid a pen toward him.
“Sign, and tomorrow we will review everything calmly.”
Eleanor crossed the room and knocked the pen onto the floor.
“You will not buy his obedience with a grieving man’s letter.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You have never supported me.”
“I paid your debts.
I defended your lies.
I mistook rescue for love.”
Eleanor took an old phone from her handbag and placed it before Luca.
“Vanessa gave me this device when she upgraded hers.
She forgot it still connected to my cloud account.”
Vanessa reached for it, but Eleanor covered the phone with both hands.
“What’s on it?” Luca asked.
“Voice notes, photographs, and messages between Vanessa and Martin.”
“Mother, if you do this, you will lose me.”
Eleanor’s eyes filled, but her hands did not move.
“I lost you the day I started helping you hide who you had become.”
She unlocked the phone and opened the latest saved recording.
Vanessa’s voice filled the room.
“Martin has copied Luca’s signature perfectly.
Once the foundation is ours, my mother’s debts disappear too.”
May you like
Eleanor turned toward her daughter.
“What debts, Vanessa?”
