Chapter 2: The Message on Sarah’s Phone

Marcus gripped Michael’s shoulders.
“Tell me.
You’re safe now.”
Michael glanced at Sarah.
“When you traveled last month, she locked the kitchen after Jordan ate.
She said if I was hungry, I could eat what she left beside the dog’s bowl.”
“That’s a lie!” Sarah shouted.
“He’s trying to turn you against me!”
Michael pulled a folded envelope from inside his sweater.
“Then why did you make me sign these?”
Sarah’s face suddenly lost its color.
She rushed forward, but Marcus took the envelope first.
“They were school forms,” she insisted.
“Give them back.”
Marcus unfolded the papers.
His anger turned to confusion when he saw Michael’s name beside details of the trust fund left by Michael’s late mother.
“I didn’t understand them,” Michael whispered.
“Sarah said you had approved everything.
But I heard her tell someone on the phone that the money would be moved before my birthday.”
Marcus stared at the signature at the bottom.
It looked like his—but he had never signed it.
Then Sarah’s phone lit up on the table.
The message preview made Marcus freeze:
“The transfer is ready.
Does Marcus suspect anything?”
Sarah lunged for the phone, but Jordan suddenly stood and cried, “Mom, tell him who has been coming here at night!”
