Chapter 4: Jordan’s Secret Recording

Nolan closed the door behind him.

Sarah recovered first and moved to his side.

“Marcus came home early,” she said.

“Michael has been lying again.”

Nolan set down his case.

“Then perhaps we should discuss this calmly.”

“You entered my home with a key,” Marcus said.

“Who are you?”

“I’m a financial consultant.”

“Consulting on my son’s trust at midnight?”

Nolan looked at Sarah.

“You didn’t explain my role?”

“She said you were helping with the mortgage,” Jordan blurted.

“Go upstairs,” Sarah ordered.

Jordan stayed beside Michael.

“No.”

Nolan opened his case and removed a second set of papers.

“Marcus, your signature authorizes Sarah to manage household assets during your medical incapacity.”

“What incapacity?”

“Stress-related lapses.

Confusion.

Anger.”

Sarah raised her phone.

“Like the episode I recorded tonight.”

Marcus looked from her to Nolan.

“You planned this.”

“We planned to protect the children,” Sarah said.

“If you force me out, that recording goes to the authorities with a request for emergency custody.”

Michael’s knees buckled against a chair.

“This is because I told him.”

Sarah turned on him.

“Yes, Michael.

If Marcus loses this house and Jordan loses his family, you caused it.”

“Stop!” Marcus caught Michael as the boy covered his face.

“Don’t put this on him.”

Michael pulled away, tears running freely.

“I should have stayed quiet.

You’ll lose everything because of me.”

Marcus’s voice cracked.

“I already lost something.

I lost the moment you believed you couldn’t come to me.”

“You always said Sarah was trying her best.”

The words stopped Marcus cold.

“I told you she locked the pantry once,” Michael continued.

“You said families needed patience.”

“I remember.”

“I stopped telling you because I thought you’d choose her.”

Marcus sank to one knee in front of him.

“That is the most painful truth you could have told me—and I earned it.

But hear me now: I choose you.”

Michael folded into his father’s arms.

Marcus held him as the boy sobbed against his shoulder.

Jordan stepped closer.

“Michael didn’t cause this.

Mom did.”

Sarah pointed toward the stairs.

“Jordan, move.”

Instead, Jordan pulled a small voice recorder from his pocket.

“Nolan told Mom not to text important things.

So I recorded them.”

Nolan’s hand shot toward the device, but Jordan passed it to Marcus.

“You little thief,” Sarah hissed.

“I heard you say Michael would be sent away after you got his money.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

Marcus pressed play.

Sarah’s recorded voice filled the room: “Once Marcus is declared unstable, I control the house.

Michael’s trust covers what we owe, and the boy can live with his aunt.”

Nolan’s voice followed: “Then destroy the authorization pages.

No originals, no challenge.”

Nolan slammed the recorder from Marcus’s hand.

It struck the floor and split open.

Sarah exhaled.

“Now there’s nothing.”

Jordan wiped his cheek with his sleeve.

“That wasn’t the only copy.”

Nolan stared at him.

“I sent it to Laura’s lawyer an hour ago.”
