Chapter 7: The Room Where the Truth Spoke

Adrian searched his archived messages.

“March fourteenth,” he said.

“That was the first message telling me to stay away.”

He entered 0314.

The drive opened.

Folders filled the screen: bank transfers, emails, scanned signatures, and recordings between Vanessa and her father, Conrad.

Eleanor opened the first audio file.

Conrad’s voice came through clearly.

“Once Adrian signs the merger, the foundation money becomes untouchable.”

Vanessa answered, “He’ll sign after the wedding.

Eleanor is the only problem.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

“She was marrying me for access.”

“No,” Eleanor said.

“She was using marriage as a receipt.”

At ten the next morning, we entered the Mercer Foundation boardroom.

Vanessa sat at the head of the table with Conrad beside her.

She smiled at my plain borrowed jacket.

“You brought the server.”

“My name is Clara Hayes,” I said.

“You’ve had a full night to learn it.”

Conrad tapped a folder.

“We have statements showing Clara demanded money after creating a disturbance.”

“From whom?” Adrian asked.

“Mr.

Pike.”

The banquet manager stepped into the room.

My stomach dropped.

Mr.

Pike placed a signed statement on the table.

“Ms.

Hayes abandoned her duties, destroyed property, and attempted to profit from contact with the Mercer family.”

Vanessa leaned back.

“Security footage also shows Clara reaching for me first.”

A silent clip appeared on the wall.

It began after Vanessa raised her hand and showed only me grabbing her wrist.

Board members exchanged uneasy looks.

Conrad pushed a resolution forward.

“Until the investigation is complete, Adrian Mercer will be suspended and Vanessa Vale appointed interim chair.”

Three hands rose.

Then a fourth.

Vanessa looked at me.

“You lost your job, your reputation, and perhaps your mother’s home.

Was it worth it?”

My mouth went dry, but Eleanor rolled beside me.

“Answer her, Clara.”

I looked directly at Vanessa.

“Yes.

Because you still had to edit the truth to make me look wrong.”

Vanessa’s smile faltered.

Graham entered with the hotel technician and placed his laptop on the table.

“The unedited footage has sound.”

The recording showed Vanessa searching Eleanor’s chair, raising her hand, pushing me, and ordering security to erase the video.

Mr.

Pike jumped to his feet.

“She told me the hotel would lose every Vale event unless I fired Clara.”

Vanessa glared at him.

“You signed a statement.”

“Because you threatened four hundred employees.

I’m correcting it now.”

“That confession destroys your career.”

Mr.

Pike removed his hotel pin and placed it before her.

“Then I’ll leave with the truth.”

Conrad reached for the laptop.

Adrian caught his hand.

“Sit down.”

Graham played the recordings from Lydia’s hidden drive.

Transfer records appeared beside Vanessa’s emails authorizing payments to companies controlled by Conrad.

Vanessa stood.

“Those files were planted.”

The foundation’s elderly accountant rose from the back row.

“No, they weren’t.”

Vanessa stared at her.

“Mrs.

Dalton?”

“You ordered me to classify those transfers as consulting fees.

I kept the original ledgers.”

She placed three thick books on the table.

Conrad whispered, “You said you destroyed them.”

“I told you what you wanted to hear,” Mrs.

Dalton replied.

Vanessa grabbed a water pitcher and threw it toward Graham’s laptop.

Clara pulled the computer away as water spread across the table.

“Get out of my way!” Vanessa screamed.

She ran for the door, but two investigators entered before she reached it.

Conrad took out his phone.

“I’m calling the mayor.”

One investigator held up a document.

“You may call your attorney.

We have warrants for the Vale offices, your residence, and every company named in these ledgers.”

Vanessa backed into the table.

“This family begged me to save it.”

Eleanor rolled forward.

“You didn’t save us.

You found us grieving and decided grief made us easy to rob.”

The investigator asked Vanessa to surrender her phone.

She held it over the pitcher.

“If I drop this, you have nothing.”

Graham raised his pen.

“You offered Clara a bribe while I recorded you.

You threatened her mother while I recorded you.

And your cloud account has already been preserved.”

Vanessa’s fingers opened.

The phone struck the table instead of the water.

The lead investigator turned to Conrad.

“Conrad Vale, you are being detained on suspicion of financial fraud, forgery, obstruction, and exploitation of charitable funds.”

Then he faced Vanessa.

“Vanessa Vale, the same applies to you.”

As an investigator stepped beside her, Vanessa looked at me with pure hatred.

“You should have stayed invisible, Clara.”

May you like

I picked up my old name badge and set it before her.

“You should have remembered that invisible people can still see everything.”
