Chapter 2: The Letter Behind the Drawer

The final chime faded.

“Midnight,” Margaret said.

She opened the portfolio and placed a document in Emily’s shaking hands.

“What is this?” Emily asked.

“The deed.

Your mother placed this estate in trust for you.

As of tonight, it belongs to you.”

Robert stepped forward.

“That document is worthless.”

“Then why are you trembling?” Margaret asked.

Emily stared at him.

“You knew?”

Robert’s eyes dropped to the silver key.

“Give me that.”

“No,” Margaret said.

“The key was Evelyn’s protection.”

Karen suddenly gripped the doorway.

“You told me Evelyn destroyed everything.”

Silence fell.

Margaret turned sharply.

“Everything?”

Robert glared at Karen.

“Go inside.”

But Emily had heard enough.

“What did my mother leave me?”

Margaret led her into the study and stopped before an old cabinet.

Behind its lowest drawer was a hidden keyhole.

Emily inserted the silver key.

Click.

Inside lay a sealed envelope bearing her name—and a photograph of Robert standing beside a woman Emily had never seen.

Robert rushed toward it, but a security man blocked him.

Margaret opened the envelope and read the first line.

Then her face went pale.

“Emily,” she whispered, “your mother says Robert is not the man you believe he is.”
