Chapter 6: The Words Evelyn Finished

Emily grabbed Margaret’s phone.
“Karen, where are you?”
“In the garage office.”
“Lock the door.”
“I did.
Robert has another key.”
Robert looked at his own phone and smiled.
The call had come from a recording he had arranged before entering Naomi’s office.
Emily lowered the phone.
“She isn’t on the line now.”
“No,” Robert said.
“But she is learning what happens when she betrays me.”
Emily moved toward him, but Margaret caught her shoulders.
“Let me go.”
“He wants you frightened and careless.”
Robert buttoned his coat.
“Sign the settlement before nine.
The estate remains mine, and Karen walks away with enough to start over.”
“And if I refuse?” Emily asked.
“She leaves with nothing.”
Naomi stepped forward.
“You cannot silence all of us.”
“I only need the board to believe Margaret mishandled the trust.
After that, Calvin will keep this tied up for years.”
Calvin’s face tightened.
“Do not speak for me.”
Robert turned.
“You are already in it.”
“No.
You said the amendment was genuine.”
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
“And you accepted generous payment not to ask questions.”
Calvin looked toward Naomi’s recording light.
Robert saw it too late.
“Turn that off.”
Naomi pressed another button.
“It has already been sent.”
Calvin backed toward the door.
“I will not destroy my career for you.”
“You built your career with my money.”
“And I can save it by cooperating.”
Robert caught Calvin’s coat.
One of the guards pulled them apart.
Emily lifted her chin.
“That is two people who have stopped being afraid of you tonight.”
Robert pointed at her.
“Your mother was afraid.
Listen to the rest before you make her into a hero.”
Naomi opened a file on her computer.
Evelyn’s voice returned, weak but clear.
“I cannot take Emily with me.
She must remain with Robert until she turns eighteen, because if I remove her, he can challenge the trust as an abandoned spouse.
Naomi will keep the second deed.
The key will lead Emily to my letter.”
Emily pressed both hands over her mouth.
The recording continued.
“Emily, I did not choose him.
I chose the one path that kept your inheritance beyond his reach.
Forgive me for letting you believe otherwise.”
Her knees buckled.
Margaret held her as she began to sob.
“I have you.”
“She knew what he would do.”
“Yes.”
“And she still had to leave me there.”
Margaret’s own tears fell.
“Because I would not answer her letters.”
Emily looked up.
“Say it again.”
“I failed your mother.
I failed you.”
“Why didn’t you believe her?”
“Because believing Robert was easier than admitting my son had become cruel.”
Emily cried against her shoulder, and Margaret held on without asking to be forgiven.
The office door opened.
Karen entered carrying a metal box.
Snow clung to her hair, and one sleeve of her coat was torn.
Robert stared at her.
“How did you get out?”
“The kitchen staff opened the service gate.”
“You have nowhere to go.”
Karen placed the box in front of Emily.
“Then I will begin with nowhere.”
Robert stepped toward her.
“That belongs to me.”
Karen removed her wedding ring.
“No.
This does.”
She set it in his palm and closed his fingers around it.
“I heard Evelyn’s full recording years ago,” Karen said.
“Robert made me erase his copy.
I saved one.”
Robert’s voice fell to a whisper.
“You lying fool.”
Karen opened the box.
Inside were bank ledgers, loan agreements, and a small digital recorder.
Naomi picked up the top page.
“These transfers carry Robert’s signature.”
Karen shook her head.
“Look at the final ledger.”
Margaret turned to the last page.
Her face hardened.
“What is it?” Emily asked.
Margaret placed the ledger on the desk.

Robert had not only emptied Evelyn’s trust.
He had transferred the money into Emily’s name, making her appear responsible for every missing dollar.
