Chapter 5: The Woman in the Photograph

The court order prevented them from taking anything, so Margaret photographed every page before leaving.
Karen remained inside with Robert while Emily rode away beside her grandmother.
“Are we abandoning her?” Emily asked.
“She made a choice Robert did not expect,” Margaret said.
“Now we make sure it matters.”
Emily dialed the number written on the photograph.
A woman answered on the fourth ring.
“Who is this?”
“My name is Emily Carter.”
Silence followed.
“Did you find the key?”
Emily sat forward.
“Naomi?”
“Do not return to the estate.
Meet me at the old Whitmore office.”
Margaret took the phone.
“Naomi, we thought you had left the country.”
“You thought what Robert wanted you to think.”
The line went quiet.
An hour later, Naomi Reed opened the office door.
The woman in the photograph had silver at her temples now, but Emily recognized her eyes.
Naomi touched Emily’s cheek.
“You look like Evelyn.”
“Everyone keeps telling me what my mother wanted.
I need proof.”
“You deserve it.”
Naomi unlocked a filing cabinet and removed a blue folder.
“Evelyn discovered that Robert had borrowed against the estate.
He used her signature on three loan agreements.”
Margaret opened the folder.
“Nearly two million dollars.”
“And that was only the beginning,” Naomi said.
“He moved trust income into a company controlled by Calvin Price.”
Emily looked between them.
“His solicitor?”
“His partner.”
The outside door opened.
Robert entered with Calvin and two private security guards.
“You always were predictable, Naomi.”
Naomi closed the folder.
“And you always mistook decency for weakness.”
Robert faced Emily.
“Come home.
I will give you the house and enough money for college.”
“You said the house was already yours.”
“I am offering peace.”
“You are offering me part of what you took.”
His smile disappeared.
“Karen is still under my roof.”
Emily stepped toward him.
“Is that a threat?”
“It is a reminder that choices have consequences.”
Margaret moved beside Emily.
“If Karen so much as calls us frightened, I will use every resource I have against you.”
Robert laughed.
“By morning, you will have no resources.”
Calvin held up a court order.
“These records relate to disputed property.
Hand them over.”
Naomi passed him the blue folder.
Emily stared at her.
“What are you doing?”
“Following the order.”
Robert opened it.
The folder was empty.
Naomi pressed a button beneath her desk.
A green light appeared on the wall.
“The files were scanned twelve years ago.”
Robert swept a lamp from the desk.
It struck the floor.
One guard stepped back.
The other looked at Calvin.
Naomi folded her arms.
“Everything you said after entering was recorded too.”
Calvin turned on Robert.
“You told me there were no copies.”
Robert seized Naomi’s computer, but the screen required a password.
“Where are the files?”
“Somewhere your money cannot reach.”
He raised the computer over the floor.
Emily stood in front of him.
“Go ahead.
Let everyone see who you are.”
For one moment, neither moved.
Robert lowered it.
“You think Evelyn protected you?” he said.
“She prepared to leave you.”
Emily’s face drained.
“What?”
“I have her recording.
She says your name herself.”
Naomi’s voice sharpened.
“That recording was sealed.”
“Not anymore.”
Robert took out his phone and pressed play.
Evelyn’s voice filled the room.
“I cannot take Emily with me.
She must remain with Robert.”
Emily stumbled against the desk.
Robert stopped the recording.
“Your mother chose me over you.”
Naomi reached for the phone, but Robert slid it into his coat.
“That was not the whole message.”
“It was the only part she needed.”
Emily looked at Naomi.
“What came next?”
Before Naomi could answer, Margaret’s phone rang.
Karen was crying so hard she could barely speak.

“He found the metal box,” she whispered.
“And he knows I helped you.”
