Chapter 2: The Second Page

Nobody moved.
I stared at my father, wondering what the wedding planner could possibly mean.
Arthur gently helped her to her feet.
“Please, Ms.
Carter.
Not here.”
Diane stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.
He can’t approve anything.”
The planner looked at her.
“You know exactly who Mr.
Bennett is.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“Mom, what is she talking about?”
“I’ve never seen this man before,” Diane snapped.
Arthur’s face tightened.
“Then why did you come to my office three days ago?”
Diane went pale.
I looked from her to my father.
“Dad, what office?”
Before he could answer, Ms.
Carter opened a leather folder.
“Arthur Bennett is chairman of the foundation that owns this hotel.
The board is waiting for him to authorize an emergency payment.”
Vanessa’s voice trembled.
“How much?”
“Eight million dollars.”
Gasps swept through the ballroom.
Diane grabbed the folder, but a document slipped out and landed at my feet.
Her name was printed across the top.
“What is this?” I asked.
Arthur lowered his eyes.
“The real reason Diane wanted this wedding to happen today.”
Then my phone lit up with a message from an unknown number: **DON’T MARRY VANESSA UNTIL YOU SEE THE SECOND PAGE.**
