Chapter 5: The Man Behind the Message

Arthur called the foundation’s finance director and put the phone on speaker.

“Freeze the receiving account,” he said.

A woman answered through the phone.

“We tried.

The funds were moved in four separate transfers.”

“To where?”

“Two overseas accounts and a holding company registered this morning.”

Diane reached for Vanessa.

“We’re leaving.”

I blocked the aisle.

“You knew the money had moved.”

“You have no authority to detain me.”

“No,” Arthur said, “but hotel security can ask you to remain while the transfer is investigated.”

Diane laughed.

“Investigated by whom?

Your compromised staff?”

Nolan stepped beside her.

“Mr.

Bennett, the authorization carried your signature and Daniel’s consent.

Any public accusation could expose the foundation to a damaging lawsuit.”

“You helped her,” Ms.

Carter said.

“I followed procedure.”

“You attended a wedding to watch a financial condition become valid.”

“I was invited as a guest.”

The rear doors opened.

A silver-haired man entered carrying a battered laptop.

Vanessa made a sound beside me.

“Dad?”

Diane’s face changed.

“Michael, get out.”

He stopped a few feet from us.

“I sent the messages, Daniel.”

Vanessa rushed toward him, then stopped.

“You haven’t called me in six years.”

“Your mother made sure my calls never reached you.”

“That’s a lie,” Diane snapped.

Michael opened the laptop.

“Then let her hear your voice.”

A recording began to play.

Diane’s voice filled the ballroom.

“Vanessa can get his signature.

Once the ceremony is legal, Nolan releases the funds.”

Nolan’s voice followed.

“Arthur refused the application.”

“Then use the signature from last year’s hotel contract.”

The recording stopped.

Diane lunged for the laptop, but Michael closed it against his chest.

“You recorded me in my own office?” she shouted.

“I recorded the meeting where you asked me to lie to our daughter.”

“You abandoned her!”

“You told her I chose another family.

You threatened to ruin my repair shop if I contacted her.”

Vanessa’s knees buckled.

I caught her elbow.

She looked at Michael.

“Did you leave because you didn’t want me?”

“No.” His voice broke.

“I left because your mother emptied our accounts and blamed me.

I was ashamed, and then I was afraid.”

Diane pointed at him.

“He is a bitter ex-husband with a fabricated recording.”

Nolan nodded.

“A recording without verified metadata proves nothing.”

Arthur looked at me.

“Daniel, come upstairs.

We need the foundation’s legal team.”

I shook off his hand.

“First you hide millions.

Now you want another private room.”

“Son—”

“Was any part of my life honest?”

Vanessa’s fingers tightened around my sleeve.

“Maybe your father used the wedding too.”

Arthur flinched as if she had struck him.

I looked at the worn jacket, the gift box, and the man I thought I knew.

“Tell me she’s wrong.”

Arthur’s eyes shone.

“Your mother’s relatives surrounded us when she became ill.

They fought over what they believed she would leave behind.

She made me promise you would never grow up wondering whether love came with a price.”

“You could have trusted me.”

“Yes,” he said.

“And every year I waited made telling you harder.

That is my shame, not yours.”

Michael reopened the laptop.

“There’s more on the recording.”

Before he could press play, the screen went black.

Nolan was staring at his phone.

Ms.

May you like

Carter checked hers and went pale.

“The foundation’s entire server has just been erased.”
