Chapter 1: The Dinner Roll

My wife sl@pped my five-year-old daughter for being hungry.
But when I retaliated, my stepson whispered a horrifying secret about what happens when I leave for work.
My five-year-old daughter, Lily, had hardly eaten all day.
When I stepped into the house, tears were rolling down her tiny face.
My wife, Vanessa, stood over her with a cold sneer.
“You do not take food from my son.”
Lily’s small hand was holding half a dinner roll.
“I was hungry,” she whispered softly.
Vanessa pulled the bread right out of her hand.
“Don’t argue with me!”
Her seven-year-old son, Mason, shifted uneasily.
“Mom, she can have mine.”
“Stay out of this,” Vanessa snapped.
Lily reached for the basket again out of desperation.
SL@P.
The sound rang through the dining room.
Lily stumbled against the chair, clutching her red cheek.
I dropped my work bag and emerged from the shadows.
“What did you just do?”
Vanessa froze in place.
“Michael, she was stealing.”
“She is five years old!”
Lily rushed into my arms, her whole body trembling.
“Daddy, I was just hungry.”
Mason spoke up, his voice barely audible.
“Mom told Lily she wasn’t allowed to eat dinner tonight.”
My bl0od ran completely cold.
I moved Lily behind me and stepped toward my wife.
“Did you st@rve my daughter?”
“Don’t start with me, Michael.”
I sl@pped Vanessa across the face.
She stumbled back against the table in complete shock.
“You h*t me?”
“You put your hands on my child.”
Suddenly, Lily tugged lightly on my sleeve.
“Daddy...
she locks the food in the pantry so I can’t reach.”
Vanessa’s face went completely pale.
Mason moved closer and whispered to me.
“Dad...
that’s not even the worst thing she does when you’re at work.”
