Chapter 6: The Recording They Tried to Erase

Daniel moved toward the door.
Officer Grant stepped into his path.
“Leave the phone and the paper on the table.”
“You cannot search me without a warrant.”
Nora held up her own phone.
“The court issued one seven minutes ago.
Attempted trust fraud tends to make judges move quickly.”
Daniel looked at Vanessa.
“You said no one knew about the tablet.”
“I didn’t know,” she snapped.
Officer Grant took Daniel’s phone.
The screen showed Mason’s cloud account and a row of deleted files.
“You erased them,” Mason said.
Daniel shrugged.
“There was nothing important there.”
Mason’s eyes filled.
“You are my father.”
“This is not the time.”
“You had seven years.”
Daniel’s hand stopped above the table.
Mason stepped closer.
“You came to my birthdays and called yourself Uncle Daniel.
You watched me ask where my dad was.”
Vanessa pulled Mason back.
“He was protecting you.”
“From what?”
Neither of them answered.
Diane opened her arms, but Mason remained standing alone.
Nora connected the tablet to her laptop.
“Deleted cloud files remain recoverable for thirty days.”
Vanessa lunged across the table and knocked the laptop to the floor.
Officer Grant caught her before she reached the tablet.
“Let go of me!”
“Sit down, Mrs.
Carter.”
Her attorney backed toward the wall.
“Vanessa, I advised you not to touch any evidence.”
The laptop screen had cracked, but the audio continued through its speakers.
Daniel’s recorded voice filled the room.
“Keep Lily frightened.
If she complains, say she has problems because she lost her mother.”
Then Vanessa answered, “Michael still checks on her.”
“Make him look unstable.
The recording only needs to show what he does, not what led to it.”
I gripped the table.
Lily was waiting with Mrs.
Alvarez in another room, yet hearing her name made me want to tear the speaker from the wall.
The recording continued.
“And Mason?” Vanessa had asked.
Daniel laughed.
“Once the money clears, Diane can keep him.”
Mason stumbled backward.
Diane caught him before he fell.
“You were leaving me,” he said.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I was angry when I said that.”
“You didn’t say it.
He did.”
“I would have changed his mind.”
Daniel turned on her.
“Stop dragging me into your failures.”
“My failures?” Vanessa shouted.
“You owe half a million dollars!”
Officer Grant looked at Daniel.
“To whom?”
Daniel said nothing.
Nora raised a bank statement recovered with Rachel’s letter.
“The requested transfer was directed to Carter Development Holdings.
Daniel owns that company.”
“I intended to repay the trust.”
“With what?” I asked.
He leaned toward me.
“Drop the complaint, and I’ll withdraw the petition.
Vanessa agrees to leave.
You keep Lily, and no one sees the video of you striking your wife.”
There it was—the deal he thought I would take.
“I will answer for what I did,” I said.
“You will answer for what you did.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Then enjoy losing your daughter.
That video will follow you into family court.”
Helen entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was the second phone Vanessa had dropped in water.
“The technicians recovered the cloud access token,” she said.
“The complete dining-room video was uploaded automatically.”
Vanessa stopped smiling.
Helen pressed play.
The video began twelve minutes before I came home.
It showed Vanessa denying Lily food, striking her, dragging her toward the basement, then placing the camera to capture only my return.
Daniel whispered, “Turn that off.”
Officer Grant reached for his radio.
“Daniel Carter and Vanessa Carter, you are both being detained in connection with attempted fraud, evidence tampering, and child endangerment.”
Vanessa pulled against the officer.
“Michael, tell them this is a family misunderstanding.”
I stood beside Mason.
“You made sure the camera saw what I did.
Now it will show everyone what you did too.”
As Officer Grant led Daniel away, my brother looked back.
“You think you saved them?” he said.

“Ask Diane whose money paid for Rachel’s trust.”
Diane’s grip on Mason suddenly tightened.
