Chapter 2: The Message on Vanessa’s Phone
I stared at Mason.
“Tell me what she does.”
Vanessa grabbed his arm.
“Go to your room.
Now.”
Mason pulled away and hid behind me.
“She locks Lily in the basement when you leave.
Sometimes she stays there for hours.”
“That’s a lie!” Vanessa shouted.
Lily began crying.
“It’s dark down there, Daddy.
She says nobody will believe me.”
My hands shook as I looked at my wife.
“Give me the basement key.”
“I don’t know what they’re talking about.”
“Yes, you do,” Mason said.
He reached into his pocket and placed a small brass key in my palm.
“I took it this morning because Lily was scared.”
Vanessa lunged for it, but I stepped between them.
“Why are you locking my daughter downstairs?”
Before she could answer, her phone lit up on the table.
Vanessa’s face changed instantly.
I picked it up.
A message filled the screen: “Did you find Lily’s trust papers?
Michael can’t know what we’re planning.”
Then I saw the name of the person who had sent it—and my knees nearly gave way.
