Chapter 2: The Name on the Watch

My wife reached for the phone, but our daughter pulled it against her chest.
“Don’t,” she said.
“Dad deserves to see this.”
She turned the screen toward me.
It showed a receipt from an expensive jewelry store, dated yesterday.
The total was $1,198.
“You returned her camera to buy jewelry?” I asked.
“It isn’t what you think,” my wife whispered.
Our daughter enlarged a photo beneath the receipt.
It was a gold watch in a velvet box, engraved with the words: “To Daniel—our new beginning.”
My stomach tightened.
My name wasn’t Daniel.
“Who is he?” I demanded.
My wife’s face lost all color.
“Give me the phone.
Now.”
“No,” our daughter replied.
“You took her graduation gift and lied to all of us.”
At that moment, the daughter whose camera had been returned appeared in the doorway.
Her eyes were red, and she held a sealed envelope.
“Dad, the watch isn’t the worst part,” she said.
My wife rushed toward her.
“You promised you wouldn’t open that!”
Our daughter stepped back and handed me the envelope.
Inside was a document bearing my wife’s signature—and a date from six months earlier.
Then I read the first line and finally understood why she was so terrified.
