Chapter 7: The Witness in the Blue Scarf

The footage showed Victor at the counter wearing glasses and a blue scarf.

Beside him stood a young woman with Sophie’s hair color and one of Sophie’s old college sweatshirts.

“That isn’t me,” Sophie said.

Mrs.

Patel paused the recording.

“Do you recognize her?”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Her name is Paige.

She worked for the property company selling Elena the retreat.”

Grace looked at him.

“How certain are you?”

“She attended two meetings.

Elena said she was Victor’s assistant.”

The conference-room door opened.

Victor stood behind a bank supervisor.

“This meeting is over,” he said.

“My client’s records are being displayed to unauthorized people.”

Mrs.

Patel remained seated.

“Sophie is the account holder.”

“She authorized Paige Lane to act for her.”

Sophie rose.

“I have never met Paige Lane.”

The supervisor looked at Victor.

“Paige Lane is your daughter?”

Victor’s eyes moved to the frozen image.

Elena stepped into the room.

“This has gone far enough.”

“No,” I said.

“It went too far when you used our daughter’s name.”

Elena pointed at Daniel.

“He planned the transfers.

He needed investors, and now he’s blaming me because the property deal failed.”

Daniel placed his phone on the table.

“Play message 214.”

Megan tapped the screen.

Elena’s recorded voice filled the room.

“Victor says Paige can pass for Sophie if she keeps her head down.

Once the credit line clears, Martin can’t stop us.”

Victor reached for the phone.

Grace covered it with her hand.

“Touch it,” she said, “and the bank will add attempted destruction of evidence to its report.”

Victor drew his hand back.

Elena faced Daniel.

“You recorded me?”

“You sent a voice message.”

“You told me you deleted those.”

“I lied.”

For the first time, her certainty slipped.

Then she turned to me.

“Martin, if you push this, the girls will lose everything.

The house will be tied up for years.

Sophie will miss college, and Megan’s name will be pulled into every hearing.”

“You’re threatening them again.”

“I’m telling you what Grace won’t.

Families survive by keeping private matters private.”

Sophie moved around the table.

“No, Mom.

Families survive when someone finally tells the truth.”

Elena’s eyes narrowed.

“You want truth?

Your father knew our marriage was failing.

He saw me packing last spring and walked away.”

I looked at Sophie and Megan.

“She’s right about one thing,” I said.

“I saw signs and avoided them.”

Sophie’s eyes filled.

“Why?”

“Because Grandpa needed me.

Because work was easier than arguing.

Because I thought providing money made me a good father.”

Megan folded her arms.

“And when Mom controlled every statement?”

“I let her.

I should have checked.”

Sophie wiped her cheek.

“I needed you to notice before the camera disappeared.”

“I know.”

“No, say it properly.”

I moved closer but didn’t touch her.

“I failed to protect you when you trusted me to pay attention.”

Her shoulders shook.

“That hurts more than the money.”

“I can’t ask you to pretend it didn’t.”

She stepped into my arms.

I held her while she cried against my shirt.

Megan placed a hand on her sister’s back.

“He’s paying attention now.”

Across the room, Elena looked away.

Mrs.

Patel’s assistant entered with two security officers and handed Victor a notice.

“Mr.

Lane, your access to all accounts connected to Sophie and Martin has been revoked.”

Victor read the page.

“You have no authority to hold me.”

“We have authority to preserve our records and remove you from this branch.”

Grace passed another folder to the supervisor.

“This contains the original messages, timestamps, and Daniel’s sworn statement.”

Victor turned on Elena.

“You said the messages were gone.”

“You said the filings couldn’t be reversed.”

“You used my daughter.”

“You offered her.”

Paige appeared in the doorway behind the officers.

Her blue scarf was wrapped around one hand.

“No, Dad,” she said.

“You told me Sophie had agreed.”

Victor’s face emptied.

Paige placed a flash drive on the table.

“I kept every instruction he sent me.”

Elena backed toward the hall, but an officer blocked the doorway.

May you like

She looked at me over his shoulder.

“If I lose this house,” she said, “I’ll make sure you lose the family with it.”
