Chapter 2: The Message on Her Phone

“You two know each other?” her boyfriend asked, his smile fading.
The woman gripped his arm.
“Barely.
He’s just someone from my past.”
The CEO raised an eyebrow.
“Is that what you call five years together?”
Her boyfriend slowly pulled away.
“Five years?
You told me your ex had no ambition and disappeared when you needed him.”
“He did!” she snapped.
“He had nothing when I left him.”
“I had nothing you could see,” the CEO replied calmly.
“You left three days before I received the investment that built Parallel Group.”
A few nearby guests fell silent.
The woman’s face burned as her boyfriend stared at her.
“Why didn’t you tell me he was your ex?”
“Because he doesn’t matter!” she said too quickly.
Just then, her phone lit up inside her open purse.
The CEO glanced down—and his expression changed.
A message filled the screen:
“Did you get the contract signed?
Don’t let your boyfriend show it to the CEO.
He’ll recognize the name.”
Her boyfriend read it too.
His face went pale.
“What contract?” he demanded.
She snatched up the phone.
“It’s not what you think.”
The CEO set down his glass.
“Then perhaps you should explain why my company’s confidential contract is in your possession.”
