Chapter 7: The Voice They Could Not Erase

At eleven forty-five the next morning, Adrian entered the boardroom with Celeste, Marcus, Naomi, and Samuel.
Vanessa sat at the head of the table as though the chair already belonged to her.
She placed a pen beside a transfer agreement.
“You have fifteen minutes.”
Adrian remained standing.
“Release the claim against Celeste’s house.”
“Sign first.”
“Show me the release.”
Vanessa smiled.
“Still pretending you have choices?”
Samuel connected his phone to the room’s speaker system.
Julian’s recorded voice filled the boardroom.
“Once Marcus’s credentials approve the contract, we file the complaint.”
Vanessa shot to her feet.
“Turn that off!”
Her own recorded voice followed.
“After Adrian is gone, Marcus signs the voting proxy.
Then we won’t need him either.”
Julian rushed toward Samuel’s phone.
Marcus stepped between them.
“Sit down, Julian.”
“That recording is illegal,” Julian shouted.
Naomi handed Eleanor a document.
“The hotel’s event agreement authorizes security recording in service corridors and work areas.
Samuel also preserved the original file with its time stamp.”
Vanessa snatched up her phone and tapped the screen.
Naomi’s laptop chimed.
“Another remote deletion attempt.”
Every face turned toward Vanessa.
She slowly lowered the phone.
“That proves nothing.”
“It proves your device accessed my system,” Naomi said.
“Our cybersecurity investigator traced last night’s deletion to your apartment.”
Vanessa pointed at Adrian.
“He arranged all of this because I rejected him years ago.”
Adrian walked to the head of the table.
“No.
You humiliated me because you thought money was the only proof of worth.
Then you tried to take what you once laughed at.”
“Your company should have been ours!”
“Daniel bought shares.
He did not buy my life.”
Vanessa lowered her voice.
“Give me five million dollars and I disappear.
No interviews.
No lawsuit.
No more questions about Daniel’s investment.”
Marcus stared at her.
“You would sell your father’s name for five million?”
“I am trying to survive.”
“No,” Celeste said.
“You are trying to be paid for stopping.”
Eleanor pushed the transfer agreement back across the table.
“The board has completed its review.
Adrian Brooks is reinstated immediately.”
Vanessa’s mouth fell open.
“Marcus Hale will remain suspended pending a disciplinary hearing,” Eleanor continued.
“The Cole Meridian contract is void.
All related accounts are frozen.”
Julian headed for the door, but two financial investigators entered.
“Julian Cole?” one asked.
“We have an order to seize your business records and electronic devices.”
“This is Adrian’s doing,” Julian said.
Naomi shook her head.
“The bank reported the forged loan documents.”
A second investigator faced Vanessa.
“Ms.
Cole, surrender your phone.”
She clutched it against her chest.
“My attorney will destroy every one of you.”
“Your attorney withdrew this morning,” Celeste said.
“He called me after learning my signature was false.”
Vanessa looked around the room.
No one moved toward her.
“You all owe me,” she said.
“My father’s money built this place.”
Adrian removed Daniel’s old letter from his folder.
“Your father invested in work he respected.
You tried to turn his faith into a weapon.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled, but her voice remained sharp.
“You were nothing until he paid for you.”
“And you could have been anything,” Adrian replied.
“But you chose this.”
The investigator held out an evidence pouch.
Vanessa dropped her phone into it.
Before leaving, she looked at Celeste.
“When they take your house, don’t call me.”
Celeste raised her chin.
“They cannot take what you never had the right to borrow against.”
Vanessa was escorted through the door.
Eleanor turned to Adrian.
“There is one more recording.”
Naomi pressed play.
Daniel’s voice entered the silent room.

“If Vanessa ever hears this, tell her I never loved Adrian more.
I trusted him more—and I kept waiting for her to learn the difference.”
