Chapter 5: The Empty Chair at the Head of the Table

At nine the next morning, every seat in Parallel Group’s boardroom was occupied.
Adrian remained standing while Vanessa sat beside Julian and their attorney.
The chairwoman, Eleanor Shaw, placed a folder on the table.
“Until these claims are resolved, Adrian will step away from financial decisions.”
Vanessa crossed one leg over the other.
“That sounds sensible.”
Adrian looked directly at her.
“You filed the complaint before you saw me at the gala.”
“I protected my father’s estate.”
“You used his name on a false contract.”
“Prove it.”
Naomi set the original investment agreement beside the disputed contract.
“The signature on the new document was copied from page six of the old one.”
Julian pushed back his chair.
“That is speculation.”
“No,” Naomi said.
“The same ink flaw appears under the letter D.”
Eleanor adjusted her glasses.
“Mr.
Cole, did your company prepare this contract?”
“Our attorney prepared it.”
“Name the attorney,” Adrian said.
Julian glanced at Vanessa.
She leaned forward.
“Why is Marcus not being questioned?
His credentials approved the agreement.”
Marcus placed his access card on the table.
“Because I reported the approval at six yesterday evening—before I knew you had the contract.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
“You told me you could fix it.”
“I said I would find out what happened.”
“You promised to protect me.”
“I promised to protect the woman I thought you were.”
Vanessa pulled a second folder from her bag.
“Then perhaps the board should see what its founder has been hiding.”
She slid copies around the table.
Bank records showed a payment from Daniel Cole’s family trust into Adrian’s original business account.
Eleanor looked at Adrian.
“You said the investment came from Daniel personally.”
“It did.”
“The transfer description identifies the Cole Family Trust.”
Vanessa rose.
“My father had no authority to invest that money without the consent of every beneficiary.
Adrian knew that.”
“That is a lie,” Celeste said from the doorway.
Vanessa spun around.
“Why are you here?”
“Because you used my home, your father’s name, and my silence.”
Celeste took the seat beside Adrian.
Her hand trembled until he covered it with his.
“Daniel closed that trust account eight months before the investment,” she said.
“The bank reused the transfer description.”
Julian smirked.
“Convenient.”
Celeste looked at him.
“You worked at the bank.
You arranged the transfer.”
The smirk disappeared.
Naomi placed a certified statement before Eleanor.
“The funds came from Daniel’s personal sale of Cole Freight shares.
The bank confirmed it this morning.”
Vanessa stood abruptly.
“This meeting is a performance.
Adrian controls the lawyers, the staff, and now my mother.”
Adrian rose.
“Sit down.”
“You cannot speak to me that way.”
“You came into my company with a false contract, used Marcus’s credentials, and accused me of taking money from a man who trusted me.
I am speaking more gently than you deserve.”
Vanessa pointed at Marcus.
“Ask him why he introduced me as his future wife to three board members.
Ask him how many company conversations he shared in my apartment.”
Marcus looked at the table.
Eleanor turned to him.
“Is that true?”
“Yes,” Marcus said.
“I discussed confidential strategy with her.”
The room shifted.
Two directors closed the folders Naomi had given them.
Vanessa smiled again.
“Then the contract may be invalid, but your executive still broke company rules.
How can Adrian claim he knew nothing?”
Eleanor removed her glasses.
“Until an independent review is complete, Adrian is suspended as CEO.
Marcus is also suspended.”
Vanessa collected her purse.
“It seems the great Adrian Brooks is unemployed again.”
Celeste reached for him, but Adrian did not move.
Eleanor’s assistant entered and whispered into her ear.
“What is it?” Naomi asked.
Eleanor looked toward the windows.
“A financial reporter has received every document Vanessa presented today.”
Vanessa paused at the door.
Adrian’s phone lit up with a news alert bearing his photograph.
The headline read: PARALLEL FOUNDER ACCUSED OF BUILDING BILLION-DOLLAR COMPANY WITH MISUSED FAMILY FUNDS.

Vanessa smiled over her shoulder.
“Now let’s see who looks broke.”
