Chapter 2: The Call That Changed Everything
Elena found her voice first.
“Daniel, this is ridiculous.
He’s frightened and confused.”
“Then why are you backing away?” Daniel asked.
Her face tightened.
“Because your former wife brought a child here to ruin our wedding!”
“I didn’t bring him,” I said.
“I thought Leo was with Martha.”
Daniel turned to his mother.
“Where did you tell me he was?”
Martha stared at the floor.
“At a friend’s house.”
“That’s not true!” Leo cried.
He reached inside his jacket and pulled out a small brass key.
“Grandma locked me in her study while she came here.
She said Mom’s letters had to disappear before you saw them.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“What letters?”
“I found a box in Grandma’s desk,” Leo whispered.
“They all had your name on them.”
Martha suddenly stood.
“He went through my private things!”
Elena rushed toward Leo, but Daniel stepped between them.
“Don’t go near my son.”
Then my phone rang.
The name on the screen made Martha grip the chair—and Elena’s face lose all color.
It was the lawyer who had handled my divorce from Daniel.
