Chapter 7: The Vows He Refused to Make

The guests returned to their seats, but no one spoke.
Daniel stood before the officiant while Elena arranged her veil.
“Begin again,” Martha ordered.
The officiant looked at Daniel.
“Are you certain?”
“I have never been more certain.”
Elena smiled at me from across the aisle.
“Take Leo outside.
This isn’t appropriate for him.”
Daniel held out his hand.
“Leo stays beside me.”
Our son walked to his father.
The officiant opened his book.
“Daniel, do you take Elena—”
“No,” Daniel said.
Elena’s smile disappeared.
“You said we were finishing the ceremony.”
“We are.
I’m finishing it with the truth.”
Daniel turned toward the guests.
“Before I arrived today, I asked the venue to record our vows.
The microphones have captured every word spoken in this room.”
Martha stood.
“Turn them off.”
Marcus blocked her path to the sound desk.
“Sit down, Martha.”
Daniel faced Elena.
“Did you authorize the transfer to Bellmere?”
“No.”
“Did you sign the custody petition?”
“My lawyer advised me not to answer.”
“You didn’t have a lawyer ten minutes ago.”
Elena looked toward the exit.
“I do now.”
Rebecca raised her phone.
“Your attorney cannot erase the bank’s electronic authorization.
It came from a device registered to you.”
Martha grabbed the stack of papers from Rebecca’s file and tore the first page.
Rebecca did not flinch.
“Those are copies.”
June pointed toward the venue doors.
“The originals are with two bank investigators outside.”
Martha dropped the torn pages.
Daniel nodded at me.
I pressed the final audio file.
Elena’s voice came through the speakers.
“Once I’m his wife, I move the rest.
Daniel won’t notice until the honeymoon.”
Martha answered, “And if he does?”
“He’ll stay quiet.
Men like Daniel would rather lose money than admit they were fooled.”
Daniel looked at Elena.
“You called me a wallet.”
“You were lonely,” she snapped.
“You wanted someone beautiful beside you, and I gave you that.”
“You used my son.”
“I was trying to build a life!”
“With money taken in Claire’s name.”
Elena’s father rose from the second row.
“Give me the car keys, Elena.”
“Dad, stay out of this.”
“I paid for that car,” he said.
“You will not use it to run.”
She threw the keys at his feet.
“You never believed I deserved anything.”
“I believed you deserved better than becoming this.”
Martha moved toward the doors, but Rebecca stepped in front of her.
“You claimed the trust gave you control,” Rebecca said.
“You should have read the sealed codicil Daniel’s father filed before he passed.”
Martha froze.
“There was no codicil.”
Rebecca handed Daniel a certified page.
“Your father removed Martha as trustee if she used the trust for personal leverage.
Her threat in this room activated that clause.”
Marcus read over Daniel’s shoulder.
“The successor trustee is the bank.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You never had the power to close my company.”
“I had the power until Claire walked back into your life!”
“No,” Daniel said.
“You had my trust.
That was worth more, and you spent it.”
The security supervisor opened the doors.
Two bank investigators waited beside a police officer.
Elena stepped backward.
“Daniel, tell them this was a misunderstanding.”
“You tried to take my money and my child.”
Martha reached for Leo.
“Come to Grandma.”
Leo moved behind Daniel.
“Don’t touch me,” he said.
The officer asked Martha and Elena to accompany him while the documents were examined.
Elena pointed at me as she was led toward the doors.
“This is what you wanted, Claire.”
I shook my head.
“I wanted my letters delivered.”
Martha stopped beside Daniel.
“When your company falls, remember that I tried to save you.”
Daniel held Leo closer.
“When it survives, I’ll remember who nearly destroyed it.”
The doors closed behind them.

Leo looked up at his father, his cheeks wet.
“Does this mean you want us now?”
