Chapter 3: A Signature That Wasn’t Mine

I answered with one hand on Leo’s shoulder.
“Rebecca?”
“Claire, listen carefully,” Rebecca Shaw said.
“Did you sign an emergency custody agreement this morning?”
“No.
What agreement?”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Put her on speaker.”
I pressed the button, and Rebecca’s voice filled the silent room.
“A petition was filed claiming Claire accepted two hundred thousand dollars in exchange for transferring primary custody of Leo to Daniel after today’s wedding.”
“That’s a lie,” I said.
Elena folded her arms.
“Of course you’d say that now.”
Rebecca continued.
“The document carries Claire’s signature.
Elena signed as a witness, and the payment receipt lists an account in Claire’s name.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“You witnessed it?”
“I witnessed Claire signing paperwork weeks ago,” Elena replied.
“I didn’t read every page.”
“You told me you’d never met Claire,” Daniel said.
Elena’s lips parted, but no answer came.
Martha pushed herself out of the chair.
“This can be discussed privately.
Our guests have no business hearing family matters.”
“You made my son family business,” I said.
“Now everyone hears it.”
Leo tugged my sleeve.
“Mom, I saw Elena in Grandma’s study.
She had papers and your old Christmas card.”
Martha pointed at him.
“Stop repeating nonsense!”
Daniel moved between her and Leo.
“Point at my son again, and you’ll leave with security.”
Rebecca’s voice cut through the murmurs.
“Claire, I compared the filed signature with the divorce records.
It appears traced.
I’ve already requested the electronic submission history.”
Elena shook her head.
“A rushed opinion from your lawyer proves nothing.”
“I’m not finished,” Rebecca said.
“The receipt says the money entered Claire’s account yesterday, then left nine minutes later.”
“Where did it go?” Daniel asked.
“A private holding company called Bellmere Consulting.”
Martha’s hand slipped from the back of the chair.
Daniel saw it.
“You know that name.”
“I know dozens of companies.”
“Then why did you react?”
“I’m reacting to this circus!” Martha snapped.
“Claire has spent years blaming me because her marriage failed.”
“My marriage failed after Daniel stopped receiving my letters,” I said.
“Letters you kept.”
Daniel looked from me to his mother.
“How many were there?”
Leo raised the brass key.
“A whole box, Daddy.”
Rebecca inhaled sharply over the phone.
“Bellmere was registered three months ago.
Its mailing address belongs to Elena’s brother.”
Elena grabbed her purse.
“I will not stand here and be insulted.”
Daniel blocked the aisle.
“You’re not leaving until I understand why my money passed through Claire’s name.”
“It wasn’t your money,” Elena said too quickly.
Daniel’s eyes narrowed.
“I never said it was.”
The venue doors opened behind us.
Rebecca entered carrying a file, accompanied by a grey-haired woman in a catering uniform.
Martha whispered one word when she saw her.
“June.”
June removed her apron and placed a small black flash drive on Rebecca’s file.

“I notarized that custody agreement,” she said.
“And I’m ready to tell you who was standing in Claire’s place.”
