Chapter 2: What Was Still Inside the Binder
My mother's mouth opened and closed like she couldn't find a single word.
Then she found them.
"You cancel that right now," she hissed, stepping into my room.
"Do you have any idea what you're doing to your brother?"
"I know exactly what I'm doing," I said quietly.
That's when my brother appeared in the hallway behind her.
He must have heard everything.
He looked at me, then at the shredded fabric on the floor, then back at our mother.
Something crossed his face — not anger at me.
Something else.
Something that looked almost like shame.
"Mom," he said slowly.
"What did you do?"
She spun around.
"Don't look at me like that.
She was going to humiliate us in front of everyone."
"She paid for everything," he said.
His voice had gone very flat and very quiet.
His bride stepped back without a word.
My mother turned to me one more time, and her expression shifted from shock into something colder.
"If you go through with this," she said softly, "I will make sure this family never forgives you."
I picked up my phone again.
There was one more thing inside that binder she hadn't seen yet.
And when she found out what it was, the wedding wasn't going to be the only thing falling apart.
