Chapter 1: She Hid Her Hands the Moment She Saw Me

The sound of wet cloth dragging across polished hardwood echoed through the quiet house, accompanied by soft, ragged sobs.

On the living room floor, my eldest daughter, Maya, was down on her knees.

Her small body trembled with every harsh stroke of the rag as she frantically tried to wipe away a soapy spill.

Next to her sat a heavy gray bucket filled with murky water.

Tears streamed down her face, but what made my heart sink was her hands—the skin was painfully raw, swollen, and bright red from scrubbing far too long with harsh chemical soap.

😢

Standing directly over her was my wife, Sarah.

Her arms were crossed, her posture rigid, and her face completely devoid of warmth.

In the background, sitting silently on the plush white sofa, our two younger children watched the scene unfold with wide, frightened eyes, afraid to make a sound.

Sarah took a slow step closer to the bucket, looking down at Maya with cold indifference.

"Stop crying," Sarah commanded, her voice dropping into a harsh, unyielding tone.

"You're not done until this floor shines."

Suddenly, the heavy front door clicked open.

I stepped into the foyer, tossing my work jacket over my arm, completely unprepared for the sight that greeted me.

The moment my eyes landed on Maya crying on the floor, her bright red hands desperately trying to hide under the wet rag, an instant wave of shock and searing anger surged through me.

😤

"Baby...

show me your hands," I called out, my voice tight as I moved rapidly across the hardwood toward my daughter.

Before I could reach her, Sarah quickly stepped into my path, cutting me off with a stern, defensive glare.

"She made the mess," Sarah snapped immediately, raising her chin without a hint of remorse.

"She needs to clean it up."

I stopped right in front of Sarah, my jaw clenched so hard the muscles ached.

Without saying a single word, I pulled out my smartphone, tapped the screen, and turned it around, holding the glowing display right in her face.

The phone was playing a live playback from our living-room security camera—showing every single second of what had really happened before I walked through that door.

😨

"I already watched what happened," I whispered, my voice dripping with dangerous calm.

What did that camera actually show?

And what does Sarah say when she realizes he saw everything?
