Chapter 2: The Name on Her Screen

Sarah's face went pale the second she saw the screen.
For a moment, she said nothing.
Then her expression shifted — not into guilt, but into something colder.
"You're recording us now?" she said, her voice rising.
"In our own home?"
"I've been recording for three weeks," I said quietly.
"Since the last time Maya came to school with marks on her arms."
Sarah's mouth opened, then snapped shut.
I stepped around her and knelt down beside Maya.
Her hands were shaking as I gently lifted them.
The skin along her fingers was cracked and raw.
She flinched the moment I touched her.
"It's okay, baby," I whispered.
"Daddy's here now."
Maya looked up at me with red, swollen eyes — and then she said something so quietly I almost missed it.
"She said if I told you…
she'd send me away."
The room went completely still.
Behind me, I heard Sarah pull in a sharp breath.
I stood up slowly and turned around.
Sarah was already reaching for her phone.
And that's when I noticed it — a name on her screen, just for a second before she flipped it face down.
A name I recognized.
My brother.
😨
