THE WOMAN AT THE DOOR / Chapter 16 / 22

Chapter 16

"Gerald." Derrick kept his voice calm.

"You built a financial trap into my wedding documents.

You did it without my knowledge.

You planned to use my marriage as an instrument to transfer an asset you had no right to." He paused.

"Make the phone call if you want.

But understand that when Sonya Caldwell files the motion on Monday morning, everything I just described will be part of the public record."

Gerald's face changed.

"How do you know that name?" he said.

Derrick let the question sit there unanswered.

Gerald looked at his daughter.

Vanessa looked at the floor.

The understanding of what had happened moved across Gerald's face slowly, and watching it arrive was not satisfying in the way Derrick had imagined it might be.

It was just tired and sad — the face of a man realizing the person he'd underestimated was his own daughter.

"Vanessa," Gerald said.

She looked up.

"We'll talk at home," she said.

Quietly.

Firmly.

"Not here."

Gerald closed his mouth.

He was a man who always had more to say.

Watching him not say it was the most remarkable thing Derrick had seen all day.

Raymond appeared at Derrick's elbow.

"Car's outside when you're ready.

I'll bring your mom."

Derrick nodded.

He looked around the ballroom one more time.

The flowers.

The arch.

The marble floor.

Fourteen months of planning made visible and expensive.

He walked out.

## CHAPTER 9: What the Six Years Had Cost Her

The hotel suite Raymond had booked was three floors above the ballroom.

It was quiet.

Clean.

Nothing like the venue below.

Raymond had ordered soup and bread and a pot of tea without being asked, and Celestine had eaten half a bowl before she set the spoon down and said: "Now tell me."

May you like

Derrick sat across from her.

Raymond had quietly moved to the far end of the room and picked up a newspaper he wasn't reading.
