"I'm here, Mom.

I'm here," he promised, pulling her into a protective embrace right in front of all the stunned guests.

Up at the floral arch, the bride stood entirely frozen, her jaw dropped in absolute shock and her eyes wide with humiliation as the entire room held its breath.

## CHAPTER 2: Four Words on the Back of a Photograph

🌿 **— PART 2 —**

The bride's shock lasted only a moment.

Then her eyes hardened.

"Get.

Her.

Out." she said again, her voice dropping low and cold.

"I will not have this woman ruin the most important day of my life."

Her father stepped forward, snapping his fingers at the security team near the door.

But the groom didn't let go of his mother.

"Don't you dare touch her," he said quietly, without turning around.

His voice was calm.

That made it worse.

The old woman pressed something into his hands — the green bundle she had carried the whole way.

Her fingers shook as she unfolded the cloth.

Inside was a single photograph.

Faded.

Creased at the corners.

A young woman holding a newborn baby.

On the back, four words written in pencil:

*I never stopped waiting.*

The groom stared at it.

His jaw tightened.

"Mom...

how long did you travel to get here?"

She looked up at him with those tired, worn eyes.

"Three days, baby.

I walked the last part."

A sound came from somewhere in the crowd.

A woman near the back had her hand over her mouth.

Someone else stood up slowly from their seat.

The bride's father grabbed the groom's arm.

"Son, this is not the time—"

"Don't call me that," the groom said.

And something in his expression had completely changed.

😶
