Chapter 2: The Photograph in the Envelope

Gideon’s grip tightened around the blanket.
“When was your baby born?”
“Fourteen months ago,” Mallerie whispered.
“At St.
Anne’s Hospital.
A nurse told me he stopped breathing before I could hold him.”
Gideon went still.
“Owen was brought to me fourteen months ago—from St.
Anne’s.”
Mallerie clutched the child closer.
“Who gave him to you?”
Before Gideon could answer, the door opened.
An older woman stepped inside, saw Mallerie holding Owen, and dropped the envelope in her hand.
“You,” she gasped.
“You were never supposed to come here.”
Gideon turned sharply.
“Mrs.
Harrow, what does that mean?”
“I said nothing.”
“Then why are you trembling?”
Owen reached toward the fallen envelope.
A photograph had slipped out—showing Mallerie asleep in a hospital bed with a newborn beside her.
On the back, someone had written: MALLERIE’S SON—DO NOT LET HER SEE HIM.
Gideon stared at Mrs.
Harrow.
“Who wrote this?”
She backed toward the door.
“Ask the person who paid me to take him.”
Mallerie’s voice broke.
“Who paid you?”
Mrs.
Harrow looked directly at Gideon.
“Someone from your own family.”
