Chapter 7: The Truth Under Oath

Lenora entered family court leaning on Conrad Pike’s arm.

Dr.

Bell walked behind them in a dark suit.

Mallerie gripped the ring Adrian had chosen for her.

“He came back to support her,” she whispered.

Naomi closed her case file.

“He came back because Lenora promised to protect him.”

The judge looked over her glasses.

“Dr.

Bell, did Mallerie Lark knowingly sign a surrender form?”

“Yes,” he said.

“She was distressed but fully aware.”

Mallerie stood.

“You told me I was signing permission for a medical examination.”

Conrad faced her.

“Were you under medication?”

“Yes.”

“Then how can you be certain what was explained?”

“Because I asked to see my son, and Dr.

Bell told me there was no child left to see.”

Dr.

Bell adjusted his collar.

“That statement is false.”

Lenora gave Mallerie a small, satisfied smile.

Naomi called Mrs.

Harrow, but Conrad rose immediately.

“Her recording device is missing, and the memory card was destroyed.

We have only copies that could have been altered.”

The judge studied Naomi.

“Can you authenticate them?”

“We are attempting to.”

“Attempting is not proof.”

Mallerie’s fingers closed around Gideon’s hand beneath the table.

The judge turned a page.

“Until the disputed surrender is invalidated, Owen will remain in protective care.”

Lenora leaned toward Mallerie.

“You should have accepted my offer.”

A voice came from the back of the courtroom.

“She never signed that document.”

A retired nurse walked down the aisle carrying a sealed archive box.

Dr.

Bell rose too quickly, knocking his chair backward.

“Evelyn Price,” Mallerie said.

“You were in the room.”

Evelyn faced her.

“I was, and I have been ashamed for fourteen months.”

She placed a carbon-copy form before the judge.

“This is what Mallerie actually signed.

Permission for neonatal testing.

Dr.

Bell removed the signature page and attached it to a surrender document.”

Conrad pointed at the box.

“There is no chain of custody.”

“There is now,” Beatrice said as she entered with a bank auditor.

“St.

Anne’s records were mirrored to an insurance archive.

Every alteration has a time stamp.”

The auditor opened a ledger.

“Dr.

Bell received two hundred and fifty thousand dollars from a trust controlled by Lenora Vale.

The payment was made the morning Owen disappeared from the maternity ward.”

Dr.

Bell looked at Lenora.

“You said those records were erased.”

Lenora’s cane struck his ankle.

“Be quiet.”

Naomi connected her laptop to the courtroom speakers.

“We also recovered Adrian’s original recording.”

“That card was destroyed,” Lenora snapped.

Beatrice gave her sister a cold look.

“Adrian sent me a duplicate.”

His voice filled the courtroom.

“Mother said Gideon would receive my child under a sealed adoption.

She wants a Vale heir without Mallerie in the family.”

Lenora rushed toward the laptop.

Gideon stepped in front of her.

“Move.”

“No.”

“I built your life.”

“And you tore apart Adrian’s.”

Court officers approached.

Lenora pulled a lighter from her handbag and reached for the ledger.

Mallerie seized the box first.

“You will not erase my son again.”

An officer removed the lighter from Lenora’s hand.

Dr.

Bell backed toward the side door, but another officer blocked him.

The judge signed an order.

“Owen is to be returned to his biological mother today.

Gideon Vale will retain temporary visitation while permanent arrangements are reviewed.

Lenora Vale and Dr.

Bell are barred from contact.”

Lenora was led toward the door.

She turned to Mallerie, her face stripped of its calm.

“You think Adrian would have chosen you once the excitement faded?”

Mallerie opened the ring box.

“He already did.”

Lenora stared at the ring, then looked at Gideon.

“You will regret standing against your own mother.”

Gideon held the courtroom door open.

“My brother regretted trusting you.

I won’t make the same mistake.”

Before the officers took her away, Lenora looked back once.

“You still don’t know why Adrian never reached Gideon that night.”
