Chapter 2: The Voice Behind the Door

Sarah’s grip tightened around the receiver, but her voice remained steady.

“Authorization Hayes-Sierra-One.

Verify and trace.”

Officer Miller stepped forward.

“Put that phone down.

You’re in my station, and I give the orders here.”

“You may want to reconsider that,” Sarah replied.

The junior deputy glanced at the device in Miller’s hand.

A tiny red light had begun flashing beneath its black surface.

“Sir,” he whispered, “I think it sent some kind of alert.”

Miller shoved the device into a drawer.

“She’s bluffing.”

Suddenly, the station’s main telephone rang.

The deputy answered, listened for three seconds, then went pale.

“It’s for you, sir.”

“Who is it?”

The deputy lowered his voice.

“The Pentagon command center.

They’re asking why Brigadier General Sarah Hayes is being detained.”

Miller stared at Sarah.

“How did you arrange this?”

“I didn’t arrange your mistake,” she said coldly.

“But someone arranged my detention.”

The deputy turned toward the computer.

“Officer Miller…

there’s something wrong with the order.

It was approved using your credentials eleven minutes before General Hayes entered the building.”

“That’s impossible,” Miller snapped.

“I never issued it.”

Then the locked door behind them clicked open, and a familiar voice said, “No, Officer Miller.

But I did.”

Sarah slowly turned—and for the first time, the calm expression on her face disappeared.
