Chapter 7: The Last Order

Smoke doors divided the corridor into steel sections.

Sarah pressed her damaged device against the first security panel.

“Can it open that?” Claire asked.

“It was designed to authenticate me.”

The panel flashed green, and the door unlocked.

Miller picked up a radio.

“Eli, can you hear me?”

His deputy’s voice crackled back.

“Inspector General Shaw just reached the main gate.”

“Send her to the command wing.”

“They’re refusing her entry.”

Lena took the radio.

“Tell the gate commander Colonel Voss has initiated an unauthorized data purge.”

The reply came quickly.

“They want proof.”

Lena lifted her recording pen.

“Tell them I have it.”

They reached the server room as Voss entered commands at the central terminal.

Sarah stepped inside.

“Move away from the keyboard.”

Voss did not turn.

“The files are corrupted.”

“You are deleting them.”

“I am protecting classified operations.”

Lena raised the pen.

“You ordered Sarah’s detention, threatened Claire, and destroyed evidence.”

“I was testing your loyalty.”

“You found it,” Lena replied.

“It just wasn’t yours.”

Voss entered another command.

The screen displayed: PURGE — 61%.

Sarah moved toward him.

He held up a small drive.

“One more step, and every account disappears.”

Claire stood in the doorway.

“My uncle’s notebook identifies the banks.”

“Bank records require context.”

“The recording gives them context,” Miller said.

Voss laughed.

“A recording made during a national security operation?

It will be sealed before anyone hears it.”

Another voice came through the open doorway.

“Not if I hear it first.”

Inspector General Rebecca Shaw entered with federal investigators behind her.

Voss straightened.

“General Shaw, Sarah Hayes is suspended.

Her actions have compromised this base.”

Rebecca held up a document.

“Her suspension was issued with a duplicated certificate.”

“That is a technical error.”

“It was created on your aide’s terminal.”

Voss pointed at Lena.

“Then question her.”

“I did,” Rebecca replied.

“She gave me everything.”

The terminal reached 78%.

Voss lifted his phone.

“You are exceeding your authority.

I am calling Deputy Secretary Rusk.”

“Put him on speaker,” Sarah said.

Voss smiled and pressed the call button.

Rusk answered immediately.

“Daniel, is it done?”

The room went silent.

“Sir, there are investigators here.”

“Then erase the Black Sky accounts and leave.

Hayes cannot prove anything without those records.”

Rebecca’s investigator began recording.

Voss’s smile vanished.

“Sir, you are on speaker.”

Rusk disconnected.

The screen reached 89%.

Voss pressed the drive into the terminal.

Claire opened Andrew’s notebook.

“Page forty-seven.”

Sarah read the handwritten line.

“Emergency mirror server.

Authorization requires two command identities.”

Lena stepped to the second terminal.

“Andrew built a backup.”

Voss lunged toward her, but Miller blocked his path.

“Not this time,” Miller said.

Lena entered her credentials.

Sarah placed her palm on the scanner.

MIRROR ARCHIVE RESTORED.

The purge stopped at 94%.

Thousands of files appeared—shipment records, private accounts, forged orders, and a signed directive instructing Andrew to take an unsafe route after he discovered the missing supplies.

Voss stared at the screen.

Sarah faced him.

“You sent my brother into danger to protect stolen money.”

“I protected the operation.”

“You protected yourself.”

“I built your career,” he snapped.

“Every promotion, every command—you owe them to me.”

“You taught me that duty comes before comfort.”

Voss’s wrists were secured by one of Rebecca’s investigators.

“You think this makes you honorable?” he said.

“Your brother asked for you, and you left him alone.”

Sarah’s face tightened, but Claire stepped beside her.

“She isn’t alone now.”

Rebecca took the drive from the terminal.

“Colonel Daniel Voss, you are being taken into federal military custody for conspiracy, fraud, obstruction, unlawful detention, and misuse of classified authority.”

Voss looked at Sarah as the investigators led him toward the door.

“They will remember my rank long after they forget your truth.”

Sarah held Andrew’s notebook against her chest.

May you like

“No, Daniel.

They will remember what you did with it.”
