Chapter 2: The Envelope

Jasmine recovered fast.

Too fast.

"You're choosing her over your own wife?" Her voice turned cold, controlled.

Like she'd prepared for this moment.

"I'm choosing decency," Marcus said.

"Something you clearly don't understand."

Evelyn stood quietly by the door, her hand pressed against her chest.

She didn't cry.

She didn't argue.

She just watched her son with an expression so full of exhaustion it was painful to see.

Jasmine's mother found her voice again.

"You can't throw us out like we're nothing!

My daughter has rights—"

"Rights?" Marcus turned slowly.

"She has rights in a marriage.

Not in my house."

Then Jasmine did something no one expected.

She smiled.

Not a nervous smile.

Not a defeated smile.

A slow, deliberate smile that made the air in the room feel different.

"Go ahead, Marcus," she said softly.

"Make me leave." She tilted her head.

"And then ask your mother what she did with the envelope."

The room went completely still.

Evelyn's hand dropped from her chest.

Marcus turned to look at her.

"Mom...

what envelope?"

Evelyn's lips parted, but no words came out.

Her eyes filled with something worse than sadness.

It looked like guilt.
