Chapter 2: The Name He Wasn't Supposed to Hear

The click echoed.

Nobody moved.

Then Alexander lunged forward and grabbed Sofie's wrist.

"Get her away from there.

NOW."

Elena dropped the mop.

"Don't you touch her!"

She pulled Sofie back, shielding her daughter with both arms.

Alexander straightened.

His voice had changed completely.

The cold amusement was gone.

"Get everyone out.

Close the floor.

Nobody leaves this building until I say so."

Richard Blake stepped closer.

"Alexander.

What's in there?"

"I said GET OUT."

The men shuffled toward the elevator in silence.

Phones disappeared into pockets.

Nobody laughed now.

Elena held Sofie tight against her chest.

Sofie hadn't made a sound.

She was still staring at the vault.

At the seam she had found.

At the tiny gap that had appeared after the click.

Alexander crouched in front of Elena.

His voice dropped to almost nothing.

"How does she know about that panel?"

"She's three years old," Elena whispered.

"She doesn't know anything."

"That's not possible." His eyes moved to Sofie.

"That panel was designed by one man.

One man built it into this vault.

And that man has been d*ad for six years."

He leaned closer.

"So I'll ask you one more time.

Who is this child's father?"

Elena's face went white.
