Chapter 8: The Last Thing Marcus Built

Alexander unlocked the side office door.

Elena was already standing, Sofie held against her shoulder.

"I heard," Elena said.

"We need to open the vault now.

Before he finds another way in." Alexander looked at Sofie.

"I know she's three.

I know this is not something a child should be part of.

But whatever Marcus put in there, he designed it so that she was the only one who could access it.

Which means we need her."

Elena looked at her daughter.

Sofie looked back at her mother with calm, clear eyes.

"Uncle Marcus said when it was time, I would know," Sofie said.

"I think it's time."

Elena set her down.

They walked back into the main room together.

Hale was still at the table, watching.

Alexander crossed to the vault and stood back.

Sofie walked forward without being told.

She crouched at the bottom corner, exactly as she had the day before.

Her small finger found the seam.

She pressed, and the faint click came again — but this time she didn't stop.

Her other hand moved to the keypad.

"The long numbers?" Elena asked.

"Not yet." Sofie's eyes moved across the surface of the vault with the same quiet attention.

"There's another part first."

She pressed three points in sequence — the left hinge, the handle base, the upper right corner of the keypad panel.

Three soft sounds, barely audible.

Then she looked up at her mother.

"Now the numbers."

Elena crouched beside her and read them from her phone, one at a time.

Sofie entered each digit carefully, her small finger deliberate on each key.

On the fourteenth digit, something shifted inside the vault.

Not the main door.

The secondary panel — a drawer, barely six inches wide, built into the lower section of the vault wall behind the false titanium facing.

It slid open.

Inside: a sealed envelope.

A USB drive.

And a handwritten note folded in thirds.

Elena reached in with shaking hands and took the note first.

She unfolded it.

Marcus's handwriting.

She would have known it anywhere.

*Elena.

If you're reading this, then Sofie did exactly what I knew she would.

I'm sorry I couldn't tell you more.

I'm sorry I couldn't stay.

What's on the drive is everything — account records, transfer logs, the real identity of the man who built the structure, and a full record of what happened to the two people who found it before me.

It's enough.

More than enough.

Give it to someone you trust who isn't connected to Carter's company.

A journalist.

A federal investigator.

Someone outside.

Don't let Carter control how it comes out.

The truth needs to be bigger than one man's decision about what to do with it.*

*Tell Sofie she was perfect.*

*— M*

Elena sat down on the floor.

She didn't mean to.

Her legs simply stopped.

Sofie sat down beside her, pressed against her side, and didn't say anything.

She put one small hand over her mother's hand and stayed there.

Hale had not moved from the table.

Alexander stood very still near the vault, looking at the open drawer, at the USB drive, at the envelope still inside.

"He didn't trust me," Alexander said.

It wasn't an accusation.

It was something quieter than that.

"He trusted the truth more than he trusted any one person," Elena said.

"That's not the same thing."

Alexander looked at her.

"I'm not going to try to control this," he said.

"I want you to know that."

"I know." Elena folded the note carefully.

"But I'm going to follow his instructions anyway."

She looked at Richard Blake, who had appeared in the doorway at some point during the last few minutes, standing quietly with his hands in his pockets.

"Richard," she said.

"You said you wanted to make something right."

"Yes."

"Do you know a federal investigator?

Someone outside this company.

Someone clean."

Richard was quiet for a moment.

"I know someone," he said.

"I've known her for fifteen years.

She's been trying to build a case on Warren Lyle for three of them." He paused.

"She's going to want everything on that drive."

"Then call her," Elena said.

"Right now.

In front of all of us."

Richard pulled out his phone.

He dialed.

It rang twice.

"Carol," he said.

"It's Richard Blake.

I have something you've been looking for." He looked at the vault.

At Sofie.

May you like

At Elena on the floor with her brother's note in her hands.

"All of it."
