Chapter 2: The Deleted Recording

“Daddy, stop!” the girl cried.

“The camera saw everything!”

The father froze.

I held the baby against my chest as the mother rushed toward the monitor.

“It’s malfunctioning,” she said sharply.

“Don’t believe anything you see.”

“Then why are you afraid?” I whispered.

Her face went pale.

The father opened the security recording.

On the screen, his wife appeared on the balcony with the baby in her arms.

She looked over the railing, then glanced directly at the camera.

“Play it!” he demanded.

But just before the baby fell, the image went black.

“See?” she said quickly.

“There’s no proof.

The nanny must have taken him upstairs.”

“I never touched that child until I caught him!” I cried.

Then the little girl tugged at her father’s sleeve.

“Mommy deleted it.

I watched her use your phone.”

His wife grabbed the girl’s wrist.

“You’re confused.”

The monitor suddenly chimed: **DELETED RECORDING RECOVERED FROM CLOUD BACKUP.**

The father pressed play—and after hearing the first sentence his wife spoke on the balcony, he slowly turned toward her in horror.
