Chapter 7: The Hearing Before Midnight

“No!” Lily clung to my waist.
“I’m not going with her.”
Vanessa held out her hand.
“You don’t have a choice.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“She stays with me.”
Vanessa’s attorney entered with two court officers.
“The emergency order recognizes Mrs.
Vale as the primary custodial parent.”
“She tried to make Lily disappear,” I said.
“That allegation has not been tested in court,” he replied.
Vanessa smiled at me.
“Now you understand how little your word is worth.”
Lily began sobbing.
“Hannah, don’t let her take me.”
Her cry tore through me.
My legs weakened, and I pressed one hand against the wall.
“I promised I would protect you,” I whispered.
Vanessa pulled Lily’s arm.
“Promises from employees do not matter.”
Arthur stepped beside me.
“Then let mine matter.”
He faced the court officers and held up his chauffeur’s tablet.
“My dashboard recording uploads automatically.
Marcus destroyed a copy, not the original.”
Vanessa’s attorney lowered the order.
“What exactly is on it?”
“Forty-three minutes of planning,” Arthur replied.
“Including Mrs.
Vale instructing Marcus to forge Hannah’s signature.”
Vanessa released Lily.
The officers escorted everyone to an emergency family-court hearing inside the courthouse annex.
Noah remained with a hospital nurse while Lily sat between Daniel and me.
The judge watched the balcony recording first.
Vanessa’s attorney rose.
“The missing frames make it unreliable.”
“Then play Arthur’s audio,” the judge said.
Marcus’s voice came through the speakers.
“If Hannah catches him, the plan fails.”
Vanessa answered, “Then make sure Daniel sees only what we want him to see.”
The judge looked over her glasses.
“Mrs.
Vale, did you say those words?”
Vanessa stood.
“I was discussing a business negotiation.”
“A negotiation involving your infant son?”
“My words were edited.”
Arthur leaned toward the prosecutor.
“Play the final minute.”
Vanessa’s voice returned.
“Use Hannah’s login.
Put the confession in her room.
Daniel always reacts before he thinks.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
I looked at him.
“She knew exactly what you would do.”
His voice was barely audible.
“So did I.”
Vanessa turned to him.
“Don’t pretend Hannah hasn’t wanted my place.”
“She never asked for it.”
“She has your children’s love.”
“She earned it.”
“And what did I get?”
Daniel rose.
“Every advantage my name could buy.
You used it against two children and the woman who saved our son.”
The judge ordered Vanessa to remain seated.
Mr.
Bennett then presented the trust access logs.
“The transfer requests originated from Marcus’s office.
The authorization code was sent to Vanessa Vale’s private phone.”
Marcus whispered, “You said you deleted that.”
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Be quiet.”
“No,” he replied.
“You blamed me the moment the plan failed.”
The prosecutor placed a written agreement before him.
“Mr.
Vale, are you prepared to give a complete statement?”
Vanessa’s chair scraped back.
“If you betray me, Marcus, I will make sure you lose everything.”
He signed the first page.
“You already did.”
The judge suspended Vanessa’s custody rights and issued protective orders for Lily, Noah, and me.
Vanessa was escorted toward the side door.
She stopped beside me.
“Those children will blame you when their family falls apart.”
I held Lily’s hand.
“Their family fell apart when you decided money mattered more than they did.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
A detective entered before the doors could close.

“We searched Marcus’s office,” he said.
“We found forged passports for Vanessa and both children—and three airline tickets leaving at dawn.”
