Chapter 3: The Sentence on the Balcony

Vanessa’s voice came through the monitor.

“If Noah is gone before midnight, Daniel cannot transfer the trust to both children.”

Daniel stared at his wife.

“What did you say?”

“That recording is false,” Vanessa replied.

“Hannah altered it.”

I tightened my arms around Noah.

“I didn’t even know there was a family trust.”

“You knew exactly what you were doing,” she snapped.

“You’ve been inside our home for three years.”

Lily slipped behind me and held my dress.

Daniel replayed the clip.

Vanessa appeared on the balcony, looking down at Noah.

“One child tonight,” the recording continued.

“The other after Daniel signs the papers.”

Lily whimpered.

“She means me.”

“No,” Daniel said.

His voice broke on the word.

“Vanessa, tell me she doesn’t mean Lily.”

Vanessa lunged for the monitor.

I turned my shoulder to shield both children.

“Don’t touch it!”

She tore the device from the wall and threw it onto the marble.

The screen cracked, but her recorded voice continued through the speakers.

“The cloud has another copy,” Daniel said.

“You believe a machine over your wife?”

“I believe what I just watched.”

Vanessa pointed at me.

“She put ideas into Lily’s head.

She wants this family.”

“I wanted your children safe.”

“You wanted my place!”

“No mother’s place is on a balcony doing what you did.”

Vanessa raised her hand, but Daniel caught her wrist.

“Do not touch Hannah.”

I looked at him.

The side of my face still burned where his own hand had struck me.

“You didn’t give me that protection,” I said.

His fingers loosened around Vanessa’s wrist.

“Hannah, I—”

“Not now.”

Noah began crying.

Lily covered her ears as Vanessa backed toward the staircase.

“You’re all making a terrible mistake,” Vanessa said.

“That clip has been manipulated.”

“Then hand me your phone,” Daniel replied.

“I don’t have to prove anything.”

“You used my phone to delete the recording.

Lily saw you.”

“She’s seven.

She invents stories.”

Lily stepped out from behind me.

“I saw Uncle Marcus teaching you Daddy’s password.”

Vanessa’s confidence vanished for one second.

Daniel noticed.

“What does your brother have to do with this?”

The front doors opened before she could answer.

Marcus entered with two private security officers.

“There she is,” he said, pointing at me.

“Take the baby from the nanny and hold her until the police arrive.”

Vanessa ran into her brother’s arms.

“Hannah tried to h@rm Noah.

She’s turned Lily against me.”

“That’s a lie!” Lily shouted.

Marcus crouched beside her.

“Your mother is frightened.

You need to stop repeating Hannah’s stories.”

“I saw her!”

One guard approached me.

“Please give me the child.”

“No.”

“Hannah,” Daniel said, “Noah needs a doctor.”

“Then call an ambulance.

Nobody connected to Vanessa is taking him.”

Marcus smiled coldly.

“Listen to her, Daniel.

She’s already acting like his mother.”

Sirens sounded beyond the front gates.

Vanessa wiped her dry eyes and whispered to Marcus, “Did you bring the folder?”

He pressed a thick envelope into her hand.

I saw my name printed across the front.

“What is that?” I demanded.

Vanessa held it against her chest.

“Proof that this was never about saving Noah.”

The police entered—and she handed them a signed confession bearing my name.
