Chapter 12: The Shell on the Windowsill

Three months later, Tyler put the shell on the windowsill above the kitchen sink.
He didn't announce it.
Maya found it there one morning while she was washing up, a small white spiral with a pale pink interior, sitting in the square of morning light like it had always been there.
She left it where it was.
Marcus came by that Saturday for dinner — something easy, pasta, the kind of meal that requires nothing and means something.
Tyler showed him a drawing he'd made at school.
Marcus studied it with the serious attention he gave everything.
"What's this part?" he asked, pointing to a shape in the corner.
"A wave," Tyler said.
"From Miami."
Marcus looked at it a little longer.
"It's a good wave."
Tyler accepted this and went back to whatever he was doing.
Later, after Tyler was in bed and the dishes were done, Maya and Marcus sat at the kitchen table with the last of the wine.
The shell was still on the windowsill.
The light outside was soft and going toward evening blue.
"Diane says the Maricopa case is going to add significant time to the sentencing," Marcus said.
"I know.
She called yesterday."
He looked at her.
"How do you feel about it?"
Maya turned her glass slowly.
"I feel like Tyler is asleep in his room and there's a shell on my windowsill and I don't have to be afraid of Thursdays anymore." She looked up.
"That's how I feel."
Marcus nodded.
He poured a little more wine into her glass, and a little into his.
They sat in the quiet for a while.
The good kind of quiet.
The kind that doesn't need to be filled.
From down the hall came the faint sound of Tyler shifting in his sleep, one small ordinary sound in an ordinary apartment on an ordinary evening, and Maya heard it the way she always heard it — like the answer to a question she had been holding her breath around for months.
She let the breath go.
Set the glass down.
And for the first time in a long time, she didn't listen for anything else.

Maya didn't fight because she was fearless — she fought because Tyler was worth every hard moment.
