Chapter 2: Four Words on a Speaker Phone
Marcus stared at the refund confirmation on his laptop screen.
The canceled ticket had been refunded — but not to Maya's account.
The money went straight to Vanessa.
"She planned this," he said quietly.
Maya shook her head.
"That doesn't make sense.
Why would she need the refund?
She has money."
Marcus opened the second document.
The custody paper was dated three weeks ago — before the trip was even announced.
"Maya." His voice dropped.
"This isn't about Miami."
She stepped closer and looked at the page.
Her name was there.
So was Tyler's.
But the signature at the bottom wasn't Vanessa's.
It was Brandon's.
"Why would Brandon sign a custody document without telling me?" she whispered.
Marcus didn't answer right away.
He was already scrolling through his phone, pulling up something else — a message thread between Vanessa and Brandon that he wasn't supposed to have seen.
He turned the screen toward her.
Maya read the first line.
Then she stepped back like something had h*t her.
"She wasn't trying to take the trip from me," she said, her voice barely holding together.
"She was trying to take Tyler."
Before Marcus could respond, his phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered it on speaker.
The voice on the other end said four words that made them both go still.
