Chapter 8: What Vanessa Had Done Before

Brandon pulled out his phone and opened a text thread with his former attorney — a man he'd already begun proceedings to replace.

There was one message near the bottom that he'd screenshot and saved before returning the rest of the communication.

He handed the phone to Maya.

The message read: *Re: prior family court matter in Maricopa County, 2019 — client should be aware this is not an isolated pattern.

Advise accordingly.*

Maya read it twice.

"Maricopa County," she said.

"That's Arizona."

"Yes."

"She was in Arizona in 2019?"

"She told me she was in Phoenix for work.

About a year before I met her." He took the phone back.

"I don't know what happened there.

But my new attorney is already requesting records."

Maya sat down.

The shell was still in her hand.

Marcus had been right.

This wasn't about the trip.

It wasn't even, really, about Tyler.

Vanessa had done this before — found a situation, found a family with something worth taking, and begun building.

Carefully.

Patiently.

Piece by piece.

"She chose you," Maya said.

"She saw an opportunity and she chose you."

Brandon's face showed something painful.

Not self-pity.

Just the flat recognition of a man understanding that he had been used precisely because he trusted easily.

"What happens now?" he asked.

"Diane is petitioning for a formal investigation based on the manufactured declaration.

If Vanessa filed a false statement to the court, that's a crjme." Maya set the shell on the table.

"And if what your attorney said is true — if there's a prior case — it makes the pattern visible.

Judges don't like patterns."

"She still has access to Tyler through the standing visitation schedule."

"Not while the investigation is active.

Diane filed for a suspension of visitation pending the outcome." Maya looked at him steadily.

"It was granted this morning."

Brandon leaned back.

His shoulders dropped.

"She's going to fight it," he said.

"I know."

"She has money and she'll find another attorney and she'll—"

"Brandon." Maya's voice was quiet but firm.

"She filed a false court document.

She manufactured a statement from a child.

She has a prior matter in another state that is now going to be pulled into this record." Maya picked the shell up again, held it.

"She can fight.

But the fight she's walking into now is not the one she planned."

The room was quiet.

From Tyler's room came the sound of the zipper on his suitcase being opened.

The ordinary sound of a boy unpacking after a trip.

Brandon stood.

He moved toward the door.

Then he stopped with his hand on the frame.

"I'm sorry, Maya," he said.

"For all of it.

For believing her over you.

For signing that paper without—" He stopped.

"I'm sorry."

She looked at him for a moment.

"Be better for him," she said.

"That's what matters."

He nodded once.

Then he left.

She listened to his footsteps on the stairs.

The front door below.

The quiet afterward.

Then she picked up her phone and called Marcus.

"He confirmed Arizona," she said when he answered.

"2019.

Prior family court matter."

A beat of silence.

Then: "I'll start looking tonight."

"So will Diane."

"Maya." His voice was careful.

"This is bigger than we thought."

"I know." She looked toward the hallway, where the light in Tyler's room was on and warm.

"But she made one mistake."

"What's that?"

"She picked a family that had someone like you in it."

Marcus was quiet for a moment.

May you like

"Get some rest," he said finally.

"Tomorrow it starts."
