Chapter 5: What Vanessa Wasn't Expecting

The attorney's name was Diane Cho.

She had been practicing family law for twenty-two years and she had a voice that made you feel like the other side had already made a critical mistake.

She listened to everything Maya told her without interrupting.

When Maya finished, there was a brief silence.

"Send me the document images tonight," Diane said.

"Everything Marcus pulled.

The refund confirmation, the custody filing, the case number, all of it."

"I'll send them in the next ten minutes."

"Good.

Now I need to ask you something and I need you to answer it honestly, because this is the part that matters." A pause.

"Is there any version of those three incidents — the school pickup, the medical appointments, the declaration — where a judge could look at the record and find partial truth?"

Maya exhaled.

"The pickup was late.

That's real.

The medical appointments — I missed one, not two, and I rescheduled the same day.

I have the records." She stopped.

"Tyler did not say he was scared to go home.

I will tell you that absolutely."

"The rescheduled appointment record is important.

Can you get it?"

"Tonight."

"Get it tonight." Diane's voice shifted slightly — the tone of someone beginning to move.

"The declaration from Vanessa is the weakest part of their filing, but it's also the most dangerous because it's the kind of language judges don't like to dismiss without investigation.

What we need to do is establish it as fabricated before Thursday."

"How do we do that?"

"We file an emergency response.

We document the appointment reschedule.

And we present the message thread." A pause.

"Maya, how solid is the source on that thread?"

Maya looked at Marcus.

He was watching her.

"Solid enough," she said.

"I'm going to need a declaration from whoever obtained it confirming the integrity of the content.

Can that person provide one?"

Marcus had heard.

He nodded slowly.

"Yes," Maya said.

"Then here's what happens next," Diane said.

"I draft the emergency response tonight.

We file first thing tomorrow.

The goal is to get in front of a judge before Vanessa's attorney can move Thursday's hearing forward.

If we can get a temporary hold on the modification—"

"Can we get Tyler home before Thursday?"

A careful pause.

"We're going to try, Maya.

That's the honest answer.

We're going to try."

After she hung up, Maya sat with her hands in her lap.

The apartment was very quiet.

"She thinks we can do it," Marcus said.

"She thinks we can try." Maya looked up.

"That's not the same thing."

He didn't argue.

She was right.

She sent the documents.

Marcus sent Diane everything he had on the message thread and began drafting his own declaration with a care and precision that told Maya he had done something like this before, even if she'd never asked him about it.

By midnight, Diane had confirmed receipt.

By one in the morning, Maya had found the rescheduled appointment record in her email archive.

She forwarded it without reading the rest of her inbox.

At two in the morning, she finally stopped moving and sat on the couch.

Her phone showed one unread message from Brandon, sent forty minutes ago.

*This is for Tyler's benefit.

I hope you can understand that.*

She read it once.

Set the phone face-down.

Did not reply.

In Miami, Tyler was asleep in a hotel room with the television still on.

Vanessa was on the balcony on a call with her attorney.

She was speaking quietly, but the word she used most was *Thursday*.

Brandon sat in the chair by the window, watching his son sleep.

Whatever he was feeling, he kept it very still.

The way people keep something still when they're not sure what it is yet.

At seven the next morning, Diane filed.

The court clerk stamped it at 7:14 a.m.

Vanessa's attorney received the notification at 7:51.

At 8:03, Vanessa called Brandon's phone.

May you like

He saw her name on the screen and let it ring.

That was the first thing he'd done in weeks that Maya would have recognized as the man she once knew.
