Chapter 1: The Heart on My Cheek

MY EX CALLED ME A “MONSTER” IN FRONT OF THE JUDGE—THEN OUR FIVE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WALKED ACROSS THE COURTROOM AND DID SOMETHING NOBODY EXPECTED.

My wrists were cuffed.

Two officers remained beside me.

The prosecutor had spent all morning gesturing toward my tattoos while describing me as vjolent and dangerous.

Then Emily rose.

“Emily!

Stop!” Sarah screamed.

My daughter continued walking.

“Get away from that monster!”

She ignored her mother.

Emily reached me, took a red marker from her cardigan, and whispered:

“Daddy, don’t move.”

Then she drew a tiny heart on my cheek.

The courtroom collectively gasped.

Emily stepped back with pride.

“Now everybody can see you’re a good daddy.”

I almost broke.

For six months, everyone had judged me by my record, my tattoos, and every accusation Sarah made.

But my little girl noticed something different.

Sarah laughed without warmth.

“A heart doesn’t prove he’s innocent.”

Then she glanced at my handcuffs.

“Look at yourself, Michael.”

The courtroom went silent.

Because suddenly everyone was looking.
