Chapter 8: When the Handcuffs Opened

Sarah grabbed the edge of the table.

“Daniel created those.”

Daniel shook his head.

“Your hands are in half the pictures.”

“That phone belongs to you.”

“The cloud account belongs to you.”

Prosecutor Hall approached Judge Mercer.

“Your Honor, the state moves to dismiss every count against Michael Carter.”

For a second, nobody moved.

Judge Mercer looked at me.

“Mr.

Carter, the evidence used to hold you has collapsed.

The case against you is dismissed with prejudice.”

Officer Grant unlocked my remaining cuff.

The metal opened and fell away from my wrist.

Emily ran through the side door.

I dropped to my knees, and she wrapped both arms around my neck.

“Are you coming home?”

“Yes, sweetheart.”

“For always?”

“As long as you need me.”

She touched the faded red heart on my cheek.

“I told them.”

“You were braver than every adult in this room.”

Prosecutor Hall waited until I stood.

“Michael, I argued that your tattoos proved you were dangerous.”

“You argued the evidence Sarah gave you.”

“I also saw what I expected to see.” He held out his hand.

“I was wrong, and I am sorry.”

I looked at his hand, then shook it.

“Make sure the next man gets more than a glance.”

“I will.”

Two officers approached Sarah.

Hall addressed her.

“Sarah Carter, you are being taken into custody on suspicion of perjury, filing a false report, evidence tampering, and witness intimidation.”

She stared at him.

“You cannot do this in front of my daughter.”

The court advocate guided Emily behind Ruth.

Sarah pointed at me.

“Tell them this is what you wanted.”

“I wanted you to stop lying.”

“You wanted to punish me.”

“I wanted Emily safe.”

Sarah lowered her voice.

“Ask them for mercy, and I’ll tell the family judge you deserve visits.”

I held up my free wrists.

“You do not control my visits anymore.”

Her face changed.

“You think Emily will forgive you for sending her mother away?”

“I’m not sending you anywhere.

Your choices brought the officers.”

Judge Mercer called us back to order.

“This court is issuing an emergency custody transfer.

Emily will remain with Michael while the family division completes its review.”

Sarah pulled against the officer’s hand.

“No.

She belongs with me.”

Emily’s voice came from behind Ruth.

“I belong with people who don’t make me lie.”

Sarah went still.

Daniel was escorted toward another door.

“What happens to him?” I asked.

Hall answered without looking away from Sarah.

“He has agreed to cooperate.

That may reduce his sentence, but it will not erase what he did.”

Naomi gathered the papers.

“And Detective Cole?”

“The evidence unit found Elena’s deleted file on his work computer.

Internal Affairs is waiting downstairs.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

I knelt beside Emily.

“You never have to choose between loving someone and telling the truth.”

“Can I still love Mommy?”

“Yes.”

“Even if I’m angry?”

“Especially then.”

The family court clerk entered with an emergency order.

“Judge Mercer needs your answer, Mr.

Carter.

Sarah may eventually request supervised contact.

Are you asking the court to stop all contact permanently?”

Sarah watched me as if my next sentence could save or destroy her.

I took Emily’s hand.

“I’m not asking for revenge,” I said.

“I’m asking for safety—and those are not the same thing.”
